About Wichita

Know Wichita.

Wichita is the most populous city in Kansas and the seat of Sedgwick County, with 397,532 residents in 2020 and a metro of about 647,610. It sits in south-central Kansas along the Arkansas River and began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail, earning the nickname "Cowtown" during the cattle-drive era. The city later became an aircraft manufacturing center; McConnell Air Force Base occupies its far southeast corner and Eisenhower National Airport is the largest airport in Kansas. Downtown is roughly bounded by the Arkansas River, Washington Street, Kellogg and 13th Street. For stranded drivers, the defining features are the interstates that wrap and cut through town and the long flood-control channels beside them.

Highways & corridors

Wichita roads we cover.

I-35 (Kansas Turnpike)

Enters from the south and curves along the southeastern edge before leaving to the east. Toll-road spacing means fewer exits when you need one.

I-135

Runs north-south through the center, with a flood-control canal between its lanes. Shoulders are the only refuge on some stretches.

I-235

A bypass looping through the north-central, west and south-central city, roughly parallel to the Big Ditch. Long loops add miles you might not expect.

Kellogg (US 54)

Marks the southern edge of downtown and is a primary east-west route. Use the nearest cross street when you call.

Driving notes

Range in Wichita.

Three airports and an air base

Wichita has McConnell Air Force Base, Colonel James Jabara Airport and Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the largest airport in Kansas. Travelers who leave an EV in long-term parking for a week often return to a weak 12-volt, especially after cold snaps. If that happens, call from the lot with the row number and we will jump the car where it sits.

Delano across the river

Across the Arkansas River from early Wichita, the town of Delano became an entertainment stop for cattlemen, with saloons and little law enforcement, until Wichita annexed it in 1880. Today Delano is a west-bank neighborhood reached by bridges over the river. Saying whether you are east or west of the Arkansas helps our technician pick the right crossing.

Universities and arenas

Wichita State University is the third-largest post-secondary institution in Kansas, and downtown venues include Intrust Bank Arena and Century II. Event nights pack the downtown garages and the streets near Kellogg. An EV that waits a long time in an exit line with climate control running can arrive home with much less range than planned, so give yourself a buffer before the show.

Air Capital traffic

In the 1920s and 1930s, Beechcraft, Cessna and Stearman set up aircraft plants in Wichita, and the article says the city became known as the Air Capital of the World. Textron Aviation, Airbus and Spirit AeroSystems still run design and manufacturing sites here. Plant shift changes load the roads around the airport and the southeast side, so a low pack and a long queue at the gate road are a poor mix.

Cowtown street plats

Jesse Chisholm’s trading post put Wichita on the cattle trail to Texas, and in 1870 William Greiffenstein and Munger filed the plats that laid out the first streets; the city incorporated on July 21 that year. The Old Cowtown Museum keeps that era on display. Downtown streets still follow those early grids, so give a numbered cross street rather than a business name when you call.

The Big Ditch

Sedgwick County says it jointly funds upkeep of the Wichita-Valley Center Flood Control project, known as the M.S. "Mitch" Mitchell Floodway or the "Big Ditch", with the city. It runs alongside I-235. If you stop near it, stay away from the channel banks and keep to paved shoulders.

Swinging temperatures

The article says Gulf air can push midwinter temperatures into the 50s or 60s°F, while Arctic air occasionally drops them below zero. A trip planned on a mild forecast can end in a sharp cold snap, cutting range overnight.

Base and airport traffic

McConnell Air Force Base sits at the southeast corner and Eisenhower National Airport on the west. Shift changes and flight banks concentrate traffic at specific times. If you are low on charge near either, avoid long queues.

Where you might need backup

When a Wichita charger lets you down.

Wichita spreads across a wide grid, so the gap between a broken charger and the next one can be several miles of signals. On the Kansas Turnpike, exits are farther apart than on free interstates. If you are already low when you find a station out of service, stay put and call rather than set off across town hoping.

Local weather & your EV

Wichita climate, by the numbers.

Wichita sits in a humid subtropical zone with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters, according to its article. The monthly daily average ranges from 33.2°F in January to 81.5°F in July, with an annual average of 57.7°F. Big swings are common: Gulf air can lift winter days into the 60s, and Arctic air can dip below zero. Plan for heat demand in July and range loss during cold snaps.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-135 northbound through central Wichita

Nissan Ariya

Imagine a driver heading north on I-135 after a hot July day, air conditioning on high, who sees the estimate collapse. With the canal running between the lanes, the driver would move to the right shoulder with hazards on and call. A technician would add enough range to reach a station.

Example call

Parking near Eisenhower National Airport

Tesla Model 3

Picture a traveler returning from a week away to find the car will not wake in an airport lot. The 12-volt battery would be the first check. A jump, and charge if the pack were low, would get the car moving. This describes a possible call, not an actual one.
