About San Jose

Know San Jose.

San Jose is the largest city in Northern California and the county seat of Santa Clara County, with 1,013,240 residents in the 2020 census. It is also, by the article's count, the largest city in the country not served by a primary Interstate. The city sits inland, sheltered by mountains on three sides. SAP Center hosts more non-sporting events than almost any arena, and San Jose State University sits downtown near the Tech Interactive and the San Jose Museum of Art. Santana Row, Willow Glen and Alum Rock are among its many districts, and the Winchester Mystery House draws visitors west of downtown. We respond throughout the city and on its many expressways.

When a San Jose charger lets you down.

San Jose has many chargers, but also one of the highest densities of EVs anywhere. Workplace stations fill by mid-morning, and public ones near the freeways are busy in the evening. If your planned stop is full or broken and you are below a few miles, the next station can be far once you factor in expressway signals. Call us before you circle.

Local weather & your EV

San Jose climate, by the numbers.

San Jose's climate table shows August highs around 81°F and December lows near 42°F. The article notes about 298 sunny days a year, and says the surrounding mountains shelter the city from much of the rain that hits San Francisco. Summers are warm and dry; winters cool and damp. For EVs, this is a mild climate; only occasional heat waves or cold mornings shave noticeable range.

Area by area

Where we meet you in San Jose.

Downtown and SAP Center

The arena hosts concerts and hockey nearly every week, and garages around it fill early. After an event, give the streets twenty minutes to clear, then call with the garage name and level. Nearby San Jose State parking follows campus rules.

Santana Row and Winchester

The shopping district west of downtown and the nearby Winchester Mystery House both draw weekend traffic. Their garages are busy and similar. Snap a photo of your level sign; it makes finding your car fast.

North San Jose and Alviso

Tech offices crowd the area near SR 237. Many garages need a badge. Let security know we are coming, and give us the building name. Alviso, at the edge of the bay, is quieter but farther from stations.

Willow Glen and Almaden

Residential streets with shade trees make curbside charging easy. Tell us the side of the street and which way the car faces. The Almaden Expressway runs nearby if we need a quick route.

Toward SR 17

The mountain road to Santa Cruz climbs steeply from Los Gatos. If your range looks tight, do not start the climb. Turn around in town and call from a lot instead.

Alum Rock and the east side

East San Jose climbs toward the foothills, with curb parking on most streets. Tell us the block and which way the car faces. The 680 and 101 are our usual approaches here.

Airport area

The airport sits just north of downtown between the 880 and 101. Give us the lot and the row.

Museums downtown

The Tech Interactive, the Children's Discovery Museum and the San Jose Museum of Art all sit within a short walk of each other. Families on long museum days sometimes forget the car needs charge for the trip home. Tell us the garage, and we can meet you there.

Expressway network

Almaden, Capitol and the other county expressways carry huge volumes between the freeways. They have signals rather than ramps, and shoulders vary. If the car is slowing, turn into the next shopping center instead of stopping in a lane. Tell us the expressway name and cross street.

Before you call

Have your plate, model and charge level ready. Say whether the car powers on. Mention kids, pets or heat risk first. If anyone is in danger, call 911 before us.

Driving notes

Range in San Jose.

SR 17 to the coast

Highway 17 climbs steeply over the Santa Cruz Mountains. Do not start it with a thin margin; the grade and curves use far more energy than flat freeway miles.

Expressways

The county expressways are fast but full of signals. Stop-and-go is efficient for EVs, yet long waits with AC on still cost range.

SAP Center nights

Concerts and games jam downtown streets and garages. Charge before the event, not after.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Example call

SR 17 southbound toward Santa Cruz

Polestar 3

Picture a beach-bound driver starting up 17 at 20 percent, the grade burning range faster than expected. In this example, the driver would pull into a safe turnout and call. A technician would add enough range to continue or turn back. An illustration only.

Example call

Garage near SAP Center

Chevrolet Bolt EV

Imagine a Bolt that will not start after a long concert, a weak 12-volt the likely cause. In this scenario, our tech would jump the auxiliary battery and watch the car boot normally. Hypothetical.
