About Irving

Know Irving.

Irving is a Dallas County city in the Mid-Cities region of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, with 256,684 residents at the 2020 census. It includes the Las Colinas master-planned community and part of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The City of Irving notes that the city sits between two major North Texas airports, DFW and Love Field, and that it owns a number of public EV charging stations it directs drivers to find through the TxDOT map. Irving was founded in 1903 and incorporated in 1914. Las Colinas added the Irving Convention Center in 2011 and an entertainment district by 2019. The Airport Freeway, SH 183, crosses the center of the city, and I-635 runs along its northern edge, while SH 114 serves the western business corridor. EV trouble here often involves airport parking, office garages and long commutes across the metroplex.

Local weather & your EV

Irving climate, by the numbers.

The Irving article lists July as the warmest month, with a record high of 112 degrees Fahrenheit in 1980, and January as the coolest, with a record low of minus 8 in 1899. Long hot summers mean parked cars spend energy cooling batteries. Winter cold snaps are rare but reduce range when they come.

Highways & corridors

Irving roads we cover.

SH 183

The Airport Freeway runs east-west through the city center. Commuters heading toward Dallas or DFW often lose more range than expected in its stop-start traffic.

I-635

LBJ Freeway crosses the northern edge of Irving. It connects to the wider Dallas loop, where missing an exit can add many miles.

SH 114

Serves western Irving and Las Colinas toward DFW. Office and airport traffic peak at the same times, so plan charging before the evening rush.

State DOT
Where you might need backup

When a Irving charger lets you down.

Irving has city-owned public chargers, but convention days and office hours can fill them. If the one you planned on is busy and you are low, the next might require getting on SH 183 or I-635 in heavy traffic. Stop somewhere safe and call before you try.

Driving notes

Range in Irving.

Airport parking

Part of DFW Airport lies inside Irving. Long-term lots are large and exposed. After a trip, note the lot and row before calling, and expect security procedures at some gates.

Office garages

Las Colinas towers have deep garages where phones lose signal. Walk up to street level to call, and give the garage name and level.

Convention days

The convention center and entertainment district draw crowds that fill nearby chargers. Arrive with enough charge to leave without depending on a stall.

Las Colinas by the numbers

Las Colinas is a planned mixed-use development of more than 12,000 acres, home to many Fortune 500 offices and the Las Colinas Entertainment District. The convention center opened in 2011, and the Westin convention hotel completed the entertainment district in 2019. A people mover, the Las Colinas APT System, links businesses and entertainment areas in the Urban Center. Tell dispatch which tower or garage you are in; the district is large enough that a street name alone may not be enough.

Rail lines through the city

Irving is one of thirteen DART member cities. The Orange Line runs through Irving and Las Colinas to DFW Airport, and the Trinity Railway Express commuter line has two stops in the city. If your car is low near a station and you need to get somewhere quickly, rail can be an option while a technician works, but the car still needs range before you leave it overnight.

Valley Ranch and the old stadium

Texas Stadium stood in Irving from 1971 until the Dallas Cowboys left in 2008, and the team kept its headquarters in the Valley Ranch neighborhood from 1985 to 2016. Valley Ranch remains a master-planned residential area in the north. Eastern Irving, by contrast, contains older neighborhoods. Both have quieter streets where a technician can work safely.

University and museums

The University of Dallas opened in Irving in 1956. The city also runs historical museums, including the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center and the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum. Campus and museum lots are smaller than airport or convention parking, so a technician can usually find you quickly once you give the lot name.

A small town that grew up

Irving was incorporated on April 14, 1914, with Otis Brown as its first mayor, a decade after the town was founded. The article notes that eastern Irving holds the oldest neighborhoods and that the city ranks among the most diverse in the country at the neighborhood level. Older streets in the east are a contrast to the wide boulevards of Las Colinas, so give dispatch both the street and the nearest major road when you call.

Calling from a big campus

Because Irving mixes an airport, a 12,000-acre business district and older residential streets, the most useful thing you can tell dispatch is the type of place you are in: airport lot, office garage, hotel, or neighborhood street. Each has different access rules. Post offices in the city are split among Central Irving, Las Colinas and Valley Ranch, which is a handy way to name the area.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

Long-term lot after a trip

Tesla Model Y

Imagine a traveler returning from a week away to a car with a dead 12-volt in an airport lot. A technician would jump it and confirm the pack was ready for the drive home.

Example call

SH 183 eastbound at rush hour

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Imagine a commuter heading toward Dallas with the estimate dropping faster than expected. Exiting and calling, the driver would get a mobile charge to finish the trip.
