About Lakewood

Know Lakewood.

Lakewood is a Jefferson County city just west of Denver, with 155,984 residents in the 2020 census. It sits on the Colorado Piedmont at the western edge of the Great Plains, just east of the Front Range, and Green Mountain rises to 6,854 feet in the west-central part of the city. Lakewood never had a traditional downtown; West Colfax Avenue, once US 40, was the main route from Denver to the mountains. The Denver Federal Center houses the largest concentration of federal agencies outside Washington. RTD's W Line light rail has served the city since 2013, with seven stations. For EV drivers, the climb toward the foothills is the main thing to plan around.

Highways & corridors

Lakewood roads we cover.

US 6

The 6th Avenue Freeway runs east-west through the city toward the mountains. Westbound climbs use more energy than flat driving.

Wadsworth Blvd

State Highway 121 runs north-south through Lakewood from Wheat Ridge into Denver. Busy signals slow progress.

West Colfax

US 40 runs as West Colfax, historically the main route from Denver to the mountains. Commercial stops and signals add up.

Morrison Rd

State Highway 8 begins at Wadsworth in Lakewood and heads west toward Morrison and Bear Creek Lake Park.

Bear Creek Lake Park

The city describes the park as 2,624 acres at 15600 West Morrison Road, with winter hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and summer hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Note the hours so you are not locked in after closing.

Federal Center

The Denver Federal Center holds the largest concentration of federal agencies outside Washington, and entry is controlled. A car that dies inside the fence needs a security escort for us, so call base security first, then us.

Foothill climbs

Green Mountain rises to 6,854 feet, and roads west climb toward the Front Range. Keep a buffer before heading uphill.

Jefferson City, briefly

Lakewood incorporated on June 24, 1969 as Jefferson City, already with more than 90,000 residents, then voted to change the name because it would be confused with other towns. Before that it had no municipal government. The late start explains why commercial strips like West Colfax, from Harlan west to Kipling, serve as its centers.

Gulches and lakes

Lakewood Gulch, Weir Gulch, Sanderson Gulch and Bear Creek all flow east through the city toward the South Platte, and Turkey Creek crosses the far southwest. Central Lakewood has a cluster of small reservoirs, including Main, Smith and Kendrick Lake, with the Soda Lakes and Bear Creek Lake in the southwest. Parks around them fill on summer weekends.

Three colleges

Colorado Christian University, Red Rocks Community College and Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design are all in Lakewood. Campus lots are a common place for a car to sit unused for days, so check the 12-volt after a break.

W Line stations

Light rail service reached Lakewood on April 26, 2013 with the W Line, and all seven stations in the city sit along that line. Station park-and-ride lots are where cars sit all day; tell us the station name and we will find you.

West Colfax history

Before the interstate, West Colfax was US 40, the main route from Denver into the mountains, lined with motels and businesses. The corridor also held the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society for tuberculosis patients. Older lots there are tight, so give a cross street.

Neighbors on all sides

Lakewood borders Wheat Ridge to the north, Edgewater to the northeast, Denver to the east and southeast, Dakota Ridge to the south, Morrison to the southwest and Golden to the west. Many calls come from near those edges, so say which neighbor you are close to.

Ward map

The city runs a council-manager government with a mayor elected at large and ten council members, two from each of five wards. Ward boundaries are worth knowing if you need to report a dangerous road shoulder to the city.

Where you might need backup

When a Lakewood charger lets you down.

Lakewood's chargers are spread along commercial corridors rather than a single downtown. If your station is busy and you are heading west, do not start the climb toward the foothills on a thin battery. Park and call. Range delivered to a lot in Lakewood saves the $150 tow base and the per-mile fee to Denver.

Local weather & your EV

Lakewood climate, by the numbers.

Lakewood shares the Front Range's semi-arid climate, with sunny days, cold winter nights and occasional heavy snow. Summer storms are common in the afternoons. For EVs, cold mornings and foothill climbs both reduce range.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

US 6 westbound toward the foothills

Subaru Solterra

Imagine a driver heading for the mountains with less charge than planned, watching the estimate drop on the climb. Leaving the freeway at the Wadsworth interchange, the driver would find a parking lot and phone us. A visit adding about 25 to 50 miles would cover the trip.

Example call

Bear Creek Lake Park lot

Toyota bZ4X

Picture a family returning from Big Soda Lake to a car with a dead auxiliary battery after a long afternoon. Reviving it before the park closed would be the priority. Hypothetical only.
