Know Augusta.
Augusta is the seat of Richmond County and sits on Georgia's central eastern border, across the Savannah River from North Augusta, South Carolina, at the head of the river's navigable stretch. It is the third most populous city in Georgia, with 202,071 residents in the 2020 count, not including the independent cities of Blythe and Hephzibah inside the county. The city lies in the Fall Line region, about 148 miles from downtown Atlanta by I-20. I-520, the Bobby Jones Expressway, loops the city. Augusta National Golf Club off Washington Road, the downtown Riverwalk, Fort Eisenhower on the southwest side and Augusta Regional Airport all draw traffic. The Augusta Canal, built in 1845, is a national heritage area that still supplies city water.

Three ways we help.
Augusta climate, by the numbers.
The monthly table shows July highs near 94°F and January lows around 35°F, with about 44 inches of precipitation. Summers are long and hot, and winters are mild with occasional cold snaps. For EVs, heat is the main drain from June through September, and a few frosty mornings each winter slow charging until the pack warms.

Augusta roads we cover.
The 148-mile link to Atlanta crosses into South Carolina here. Westbound, long rural stretches separate Augusta from the next city, so do not leave below 30 percent.
The loop around the city, crossing the Savannah River into South Carolina. Heavy traffic during tournament week stretches short trips into long ones.
SR 4 follows US 1 to Gordon Highway, and the CSX Augusta Yard sits near that road southwest of the city; Washington Road leads past Augusta National. Both fill up during major events with slow, stop-start traffic.
Range in Augusta.
Across the river
North Augusta sits directly across the Savannah River in South Carolina. Bridges are short but busy. If you are low and on the Georgia side, stay there and call; if you are already across, give us the state and street.
Tournament crowds
Augusta National brings huge crowds each spring. Washington Road and nearby streets slow to a crawl, and parking spreads into private lots. Note the exact lot and address if you park there.
Summer heat
The monthly table shows July highs near 94°F. On those afternoons, a car parked in the sun spends energy cooling its battery. Shade and a larger buffer help, especially for older EVs with smaller packs.
An old river town
Augusta was established in 1736 and named for Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, mother of George III. The oldest streets lie near the river, where the Riverwalk and buildings like the Lamar Building and River Place stand among the tallest in the city. Traffic downtown is slower and parking tighter than in the suburbs off I-520.
Masters week numbers
The article says the Masters brings more than 200,000 visitors to Augusta National each spring. That crowd overwhelms local chargers and roads for days. If you live in town, charge before the week starts; if you are visiting, plan to charge where you sleep and leave the car parked between rounds.
Big employers, big commutes
The three largest employers are Augusta University, the Savannah River Site and the Army post. Augusta University alone employs more than 7,000 people, and the Savannah River Site is a federal nuclear facility across the river in South Carolina. Long daily commutes across the state line add up; check range before starting a cross-river commute on a hot afternoon.
Along the canal
The Park Service says the canal was built in 1845 to carry Savannah River water to power mills, and that the Confederate Powder Works stood along it. Hydropower still runs there today. Canal-side roads near the old mills are narrow and quiet in the evening; leave with some charge in reserve after a walk on the towpath.
When a Augusta charger lets you down.
During tournament week, rental EVs, visitors and local traffic all compete for the same chargers along Washington Road and near the interstate. A station that is easy on an ordinary Tuesday can have a line in April. If you are low and the queue is long, wait in a legal space and call. Do not try for a charger across the river in South Carolina on the last few miles.

Washington Road during tournament week
Cadillac Lyriq
Imagine a visitor who spent a long day at the course, came back to a rental Lyriq at four miles and found every charger nearby occupied. In this scenario the driver would stay in the lot and call. A technician would add enough charge to reach the hotel.
I-20 westbound leaving Augusta
Kia Niro EV
Picture a driver heading toward Atlanta who left with less charge than planned and realized it 20 miles out. The driver would take the next exit and stop at a safe lot. A technician would meet the car at the exit and charge it enough to return to a station in Augusta. A hypothetical example only.
