About Stockton

Know Stockton.

Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County, with 320,804 residents in the 2020 census. It sits at the edge of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, and since the Port of Stockton opened in 1933 the city has grown as a logistics and commercial hub. The University of the Pacific has its main campus here. The Haggin Museum and the Gurdwara Sahib of Stockton, the first Sikh house of worship in the country, are notable landmarks. Two passenger stations connect the city by rail: Robert J. Cabral Station for Amtrak and the Altamont Corridor Express, and San Joaquin Street. We respond throughout town and along the freeways that cross it.

Highways & corridors

Stockton roads we cover.

I-5

California's main north–south Interstate runs along the west side of the city toward Sacramento and LA.

SR 99

The Valley's other spine runs through the east side toward Modesto and Sacramento.

SR 4

The east–west route toward the Bay Area and the Sierra foothills.

SR 26 / SR 88

Both begin in Stockton; 88 runs all the way to the Nevada border over the mountains.

Driving notes

Range in Stockton.

Sierra trips

SR 88 and SR 4 climb into the mountains. Leave Stockton with plenty of charge, and plan a stop before the grades.

Delta fog

Winter fog off the Delta can cut visibility sharply. Slow down, and exit before you run out rather than stopping on a shoulder.

Summer heat

July highs average around 95°F. Charge early in the day when you can, and avoid long waits in the sun.

Where you might need backup

When a Stockton charger lets you down.

Stockton is a common midpoint between the Bay Area and the Sierra, so freeway-side chargers fill with travelers on weekends. If your stop is broken or the line is long, the next reliable option may be several exits away. Call us before you push on with too little range.

Local weather & your EV

Stockton climate, by the numbers.

Stockton's climate table shows July highs near 95°F and December lows around 38°F. The article places the city on the boundary between hot-summer Mediterranean and cool semi-arid climates, with about 13.5 inches of rain a year, nearly all from October through April. For EVs, summer heat raises cooling loads, and cold, foggy winter mornings cost some range and slow fast charging.

Area by area

Where we meet you in Stockton.

Downtown and the waterfront

The downtown core sits near the channel that leads to the port. Garages and street parking serve offices and restaurants. Give us the garage name or block, and note which side of the channel you are on.

University of the Pacific

The campus north of downtown has permit lots and steady student traffic. Give us the lot number and nearest building, and let campus security know if your car blocks a lane.

Port and industrial east

Warehouses and port facilities line the roads west of I-5. Gates limit access, so move to a public lot if you can. Give us the nearest street name.

The Delta side

Roads west of town run along levees with narrow shoulders. Do not stop on a levee road if you can avoid it. Share a pin from a safe turnout and stay with the car.

Rail stations

Commuters leave cars at the Cabral and San Joaquin Street stations. Long days parked in summer heat can drain a weak 12-volt. Give us the station and row.

Haggin Museum

The museum is one of the city's notable attractions. Its lot is small, and nearby streets are residential. Give us the entrance or the block.

SR 4 crosstown

The east–west route runs through the middle of the city toward the Bay Area and the Sierra. If you stall on it, exit to a surface street and call from a lot.

North Stockton and I-5

Newer neighborhoods and shopping centers line the 5 north of town. Fast chargers are fewer than near downtown. Share a pin and keep extra range on longer drives.

Toward Sacramento

Both the 5 and 99 run north toward the capital. That drive is flat but long. Start with a comfortable margin.

ACE and Amtrak commuters

The Altamont Corridor Express starts at Cabral Station, and many riders drive in from across San Joaquin County. Cars that sit in the lot from dawn to evening in summer can wake with weak auxiliary batteries. Note the row on arrival, and call us if the car stays dark.

Gurdwara Sahib and south Stockton

The first Sikh house of worship in the country draws large gatherings on holy days. Nearby streets fill quickly. If you are stranded there, ask volunteers where a service van can pull in, then give us that spot along with the nearest cross street.

Before you call

Have your plate, model and charge level ready. Say whether the car powers on. Mention kids, pets or heat risk first. If anyone is in danger, call 911 before us.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-5 near the Port of Stockton

Ford F-150 Lightning

Picture a Lightning towing a trailer north on the 5, range dropping faster than expected in summer heat. In this example, the driver would leave the 5 at the next ramp and call from a truck stop. Our tech would deliver enough miles to reach a station. An illustration.

Example call

SR 99 at the Crosstown

Hyundai Kona Electric

Imagine a commuter on 99 at dusk, the Kona near empty after skipping a charge. In this scenario, the driver would exit and call. A quick charge would reach a station. Hypothetical.
