Know Fort Collins.
Fort Collins is the seat of Larimer County, with 169,810 residents in the 2020 census. It sits on the Cache la Poudre River along the Front Range, about 60 miles north of the Capitol in Denver. The city began as a military outpost in 1864, succeeding Camp Collins, and the town was platted in 1867 after the fort closed. Old Town now occupies land next to the original fort site. Colorado State University, the second-largest university in the state by enrollment, anchors the city. I-25 runs along the east side, while US 287 runs through town as College Avenue. For EV drivers, the gap between the interstate and the city center is the key factor.

Three ways we help.
Fort Collins climate, by the numbers.
Fort Collins shares the semi-arid climate of the northern Front Range, with sunny days, cold winter nights and occasional heavy snow. Summers are warm with afternoon storms. For EVs, cold mornings reduce range, and snow on the climbs west of town adds risk.

Range in Fort Collins.
Heritage river
The National Park Service says the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area runs about 45 miles along the river's 100-year floodplain and includes the Poudre River Trail. Trailhead lots can be quiet, so arrive with charge to spare.
Campus traffic
Colorado State University brings heavy traffic on College Avenue at the start and end of terms. Arrival times stretch on those days.
Mountain trips
Roads west toward the foothills and Horsetooth climb quickly. Keep a buffer before heading up.
Horsetooth on the skyline
Fort Collins sits at 4,982 feet at the base of the northern Front Range foothills, about 45 miles south of Cheyenne. Horsetooth Reservoir and Horsetooth Mountain, named for a tooth-shaped granite outcrop, dominate the western skyline, and Longs Peak is visible on clear days. Roads to the reservoir climb immediately west of town.
Growth to the south
The city expanded rapidly southward in the late twentieth century, adding regional malls, and later created a Downtown Development Authority to revive Old Town. The result is two centers of activity several miles apart, so tell us whether you are near Old Town or the southern retail districts.
Brewery city
Fort Collins has more than 20 breweries, including Anheuser-Busch, New Belgium and Odell. Delivery vans and visitor traffic add to weekend congestion around Old Town and the brewery districts.
1997 flood
In late July 1997, 10 to 14 inches of rain fell over about 31 hours and caused a flash flood. Low streets near creeks can still flood in heavy summer storms; do not drive into water to reach a charger.
Dry until 1969
Fort Collins kept a ban on alcohol from the late 1890s until student activism ended it in 1969. Today's brewery districts are a newer layer on that history, and the city's population doubled in the decade after World War II.
Poudre and Front Range Corridor
The city sits on the Cache la Poudre River about 60 miles north of the Capitol in Denver, a major city on the Front Range Urban Corridor. Trips south on I-25 are long and exposed to wind, which costs range at highway speed.
Old Town and the fort site
Old Town grew next to the original fort site after the fort closed in 1867. Its brick commercial blocks and narrow streets draw crowds on weekend evenings, and parking garages fill. Give us the garage or block so we can find the car without circling.
CSU calendar
Colorado State University is the second-largest university in the state by enrollment. Move-in week, commencement and home football games bring heavy traffic to College Avenue and the campus lots, so give us extra time on those days.
Fort Collins roads we cover.
Runs along the east side of the city. Exits to town are spaced out, so a low battery on the interstate can mean a long crawl.
US 287 runs through the city as College Avenue. Signals and campus traffic make it slow at peak times.
Leaving the city northwest, services thin out quickly. Charge before heading toward the mountains.
When a Fort Collins charger lets you down.
Chargers in Fort Collins cluster near Old Town and the southern shopping areas, while I-25 runs along the far east side. If the station you planned on is busy, do not cross town on a thin battery. Park and call. Range brought to the curb is cheaper than paying a flatbed's $150 base and per-mile fee from the interstate.

I-25 near the Harmony exit
Kia EV6
Imagine a driver coming north from Denver who skipped a charge and now has three miles left. Taking the ramp and parking at the first open business, the driver would phone in. A visit adding 25 or more miles would get the car to a charger in town.
Old Town parking
Nissan Leaf
Picture a resident leaving a brewery taproom after a cold night to find the car dark. The technician would revive the auxiliary battery and confirm the main pack was fine. Hypothetical only.
