Highways & corridors

Springdale roads we cover.

I-49

The main metro freeway linking Springdale to Fayetteville and Bentonville. Interchange queues at peak times can drain a low battery while idling.

US 62

Named in the source article among the city's routes. It carries east-west traffic and has commercial stops with frequent signals.

US 71

Runs alongside I-49 through the metro. Business routes through older parts of town are slower and signal-heavy.

Where you might need backup

When a Springdale charger lets you down.

Springdale sits between larger retail hubs, and many fast chargers in the metro cluster along I-49. If the one you planned on is full or down, the next may be an exit or two away in heavy truck traffic. When the battery is already in single digits, stop legally and call. Having range brought to you avoids a $150 hook-up fee plus mileage for a tow to the next town.

Local weather & your EV

Springdale climate, by the numbers.

Springdale shares the humid subtropical climate of northwest Arkansas. The source article lists a July average high near 89°F and about 57 days a year above 90°F. Winters are cool, with occasional snow and ice. For EVs, summer cooling and cold snaps both reduce range, so keep a buffer.

Greenway through town

The city says the central section of the Razorback Greenway, from Mile 14 to Mile 21, runs directly through Springdale, with access to downtown and Lake Springdale. Expect cyclists and walkers at crossings near those areas.

Two-county city

Springdale spans Washington and Benton counties. Tell us your nearest cross street rather than a county name when calling so the route is clear.

Summer heat

The source article gives a July average high of about 89°F and about 57 days a year above 90°F. Long waits in heat use extra energy for cooling.

Tyson's hometown

Springdale sits on the Springfield Plateau in the Ozarks and is home to the world headquarters of Tyson Foods, the city's top employer, along with several trucking companies. Truck traffic and shift changes shape local roads, and big rigs on the shoulder leave less room for a stalled car. Pull well clear if you can.

Boom years

The city's population grew 133 percent between 1990 and 2010. That growth brought a Northwest Arkansas Community College campus and Arvest Ballpark, which opened in 2008 with 6,500 seats for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. About 70 home games a year fill nearby roads on summer evenings.

Shiloh and the Marshallese community

The town was platted as Shiloh in 1866 and incorporated as Springdale in 1878; the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History keeps the old name. The city also has the largest Marshall Islander community in the United States, dating to the 1980s, and the Marshall Islands opened a consulate here in 2008.

Biggest school district

Springdale Public Schools is the largest district in Arkansas, with more than 23,000 students on 29 campuses, including Springdale High and Har-Ber High. School-zone traffic slows many neighborhood streets mornings and afternoons, which can lengthen our arrival.

Welch's and the mural

Springdale was once the southwest regional headquarters of Welch's, and the 1939 post office mural shows poultry and fruit farmers, a reminder of the Tyson and grape years. The older downtown sits along Emma Avenue, east of the interstate.

Where to meet

Springdale's main streets run between I-49 on the west, Thompson Avenue, where US 412 and US 71B overlap, through the middle, and the poultry plants and truck yards near downtown. A cross street on any of those is enough for us to plan the approach.

Trucks and charging stops

With Tyson's headquarters and several trucking firms based here, shoulders on I-49 and US 412 often carry parked rigs. A stalled EV in that traffic is exposed. If the battery is close to empty, take the first exit, find a store lot and call, rather than limping toward the next interchange.

Plateau driving

Unlike Fayetteville in the Boston Mountains to the south, Springdale sits on the gentler Springfield Plateau, so most driving in town is on moderate grades. Range losses here come more from heat, idling in truck traffic and short trips than from climbs.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-49 southbound at a busy interchange

Ford F-150 Lightning

Imagine a contractor heading to a job, battery dropping faster than planned while hauling a load. The driver would exit, park safely and call. A mobile charge would get the truck to a fast charger in Fayetteville.

Example call

Downtown near the Greenway

Kia Niro EV

Picture a resident finishing a ride on the trail near Lake Springdale to find the car dead after a cold night outdoors. The auxiliary battery would be the first suspect. Hypothetical, for illustration.
