About Vancouver

Know Vancouver.

Vancouver is the seat of Clark County, on the north bank of the Columbia River directly across from Portland, Oregon, with 190,915 residents in 2020. The article notes that many residents work in Portland, causing heavy rush-hour traffic on the two Columbia crossings: the Interstate Bridge on I-5 and the Glenn Jackson Bridge on I-205. SR 14 runs east along the river. The National Park Service manages Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, which includes the Hudson's Bay Company fort, Vancouver Barracks, Pearson Field and the McLoughlin House. EV calls here often involve bridge traffic and commuter range.

Highways & corridors

Vancouver roads we cover.

I-5

Crosses the Columbia into Portland on the Interstate Bridge. The article notes heavy rush-hour congestion because many residents work in Portland, so do not start the crossing nearly empty.

I-205

Crosses the river on the Glenn Jackson Bridge, the other main commuter link to Oregon. Backups on its approaches can hold a car in slow traffic for a long time.

SR 14

Runs east along the north bank of the Columbia toward Camas and the Gorge. Beyond the city, chargers thin out, so plan the return before heading east.

Bridge commute

The Interstate and Glenn Jackson bridges carry most of the traffic between Vancouver and Portland, and rush-hour backups are long. Charge before you join the queue rather than counting on a station on the Oregon side.

Fort Vancouver

The National Park Service says Fort Vancouver National Historic Site includes the Hudson Bay Company fort, Vancouver Barracks, Pearson Field and the McLoughlin House. Parking is spread out across the site, so note your lot.

Occasional big snow

The article says heavy snow is infrequent but major storms reach the city every two to four years. When they do, ice on the bridges and hills slows everything. Keep a larger buffer when snow is forecast.

From fur post to shipyards

Fort Vancouver was established in 1824 as a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post. Vancouver was separated from Oregon by water until 1917, when the Interstate Bridge replaced ferries. During World War II, Henry Kaiser opened a shipyard, and the population jumped from about 18,000 to over 80,000 in months. New neighborhoods built then, including Fruit Valley, Fourth Plain Village, Bagley Downs and McLoughlin Heights, are still part of the city.

Fourth Plain and the barracks

The Vancouver Barracks military reservation once stretched from the river to what is now Fourth Plain Boulevard. Pearson Field grew from the old company gardens. The article recounts that Soviet aviator Valery Chkalov, scheduled to land in Portland, was redirected at the last minute to Pearson; a monument to the flight has stood on the north side of the field since 1987. Fourth Plain remains a key east-west arterial, so if you stop along it, give the nearest cross street.

Unincorporated north

More than a third of the urban area's population lives outside city limits in places such as Hazel Dell, Felida, Orchards and Salmon Creek. Tell dispatch whether your address is inside Vancouver or in one of these areas, since routes and estimates differ.

The 1948 flood

The article says the 1948 Columbia River flood nearly topped the support piers of the Interstate Bridge and destroyed nearby Vanport, Oregon. If heavy rain ever puts water across a riverside road, never drive an EV through it.

Burnt Bridge Creek

An early transit route ran up Main Street to what is now Fourth Plain Boulevard and across Burnt Bridge Creek, according to the article. The creek still crosses the north side of the city, and roads across it are good landmarks to give dispatch.

Army presence

The Department of the Columbia moved to Vancouver Barracks, which was the largest Army base in the region until Fort Lewis, 120 miles north, surpassed it. Parts of the old reservation now hold parks and historic buildings with spread-out parking.

Where you might need backup

When a Vancouver charger lets you down.

If the charger you planned on is busy and the next one is across the river in Portland, a low pack in bridge traffic is a bad bet. Stop on the Washington side, park somewhere safe and call. A short charge there costs less than a tow from the bridge approach.

Local weather & your EV

Vancouver climate, by the numbers.

Vancouver shares the mild, wet climate of the Portland area. The article says heavy snow is infrequent, but major snowstorms affect the city every two to four years. Damp cold trims range through the winter, and when ice does arrive, bridge approaches and hills slow traffic sharply.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-5 southbound before the Interstate Bridge

Kia Niro EV

Imagine a commuter crawling toward Portland at 3 percent with the heater running. Exiting before the bridge approach and calling, the driver would get a charge and finish the crossing without stalling over the river.

Example call

SR 14 eastbound toward the Gorge

Rivian R1S

Imagine a family heading out for a day hike who realizes the round trip will exceed their remaining range. Stopping before leaving town and calling, they would get a top-up first.
