About Colorado Springs

Know Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs is the seat of El Paso County and the second-largest city in Colorado, with 478,961 residents in the 2020 census. It sits at about 6,035 feet near the base of Pikes Peak, which rises to 14,115 feet to the west. Military installations shape the city: Fort Carson, established in 1941, Peterson Space Force Base and the Air Force Academy, built on land donated by the city. Tourist draws include Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Old Colorado City. I-25 runs about 18 miles through the city. For EV drivers, the elevation changes between downtown, the foothills and the plains to the east make range estimates less reliable than on flat ground.

Driving notes

Range in Colorado Springs.

Garden of the Gods

The city says the 1,341.3-acre park was given in 1909 by the Perkins children on condition that it stay free forever. Its free Visitor & Nature Center sits at 30th Street and Gateway Road. Parking fills on busy days.

March is snowiest

The source article lists about 38 inches of snow a year, with March often the snowiest month. Spring storms can arrive after mild days, so keep a buffer into April.

Altitude and climbs

At over 6,000 feet, the city sits on sloping ground. Climbs west toward the foothills use energy quickly, while regeneration on the way down only recovers part of it.

Quadrants and old towns

By 1898 the city was split into quadrants by north-south Cascade Avenue and east-west Washington Street. Manitou Springs, first laid out as La Font in 1871, sits upstream, while Old Colorado City preserves the original county seat that moved to Colorado Springs in 1873. Giving us a quadrant or old-town name speeds the route.

Biggest city by area

Colorado Springs is the most extensive city by area in the state and grew 15 percent between 2010 and 2020. Distances from the northern neighborhoods to Fort Carson or the eastern plains are long, so arrival windows vary widely by the part of town you call from.

Peterson and early airports

The Army Air Forces leased land next to the municipal airfield in 1942 and named it Peterson Field. Alexander Airport opened north of the city in 1925, and Tesla's experimental station operated on Knob Hill from 1899 to 1901. The airport remains on the east side, far from the foothills.

The Broadmoor and Fort Carson

The Broadmoor opened as a casino in 1891 and later became a resort in the southwest foothills. Fort Carson to the south covers about 135,000 acres. Both sit away from the main charging corridors, so plan ahead on trips there.

Snow after sun

The city's weather can swing from a warm afternoon to a spring snowstorm within a day, and March is often the snowiest month. A car that sat outside through a sudden cold night may need its 12-volt revived in the morning before the main pack matters.

Where you might need backup

When a Colorado Springs charger lets you down.

Fast chargers here line I-25 and the big commercial corridors, while trips toward the foothills climb steeply from downtown. If your planned station is full and the alternative requires a climb, do not try it on a thin battery. Park and call. Bringing 25 to 50 miles to you usually beats paying a $150 hook-up and $10 a mile to be towed across a city this large.

Highways & corridors

Colorado Springs roads we cover.

I-25

Runs about 18 miles through the city, north toward Denver and south toward Pueblo. Long grades north of town use extra energy.

Powers Blvd

State Highway 21 carries traffic on the east side. Long stretches between chargers make it a poor place to run low.

US 24

Heads west up Ute Pass toward the mountains and east onto the plains. The climb west is steep, so do not start it low.

SH 83 and SH 94

SH 83 runs north on the plains side, while SH 94 heads east. Both leave town fast and services thin out.

Example call

US 24 west toward Ute Pass

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Imagine a driver heading for the mountains who starts the climb with less charge than the estimate suggested. The driver would turn into a safe lot and call before the steep part. A $175 charge would add range for the trip.

Example call

Garden of the Gods parking

Volkswagen ID.4

Picture a visitor finishing an early hike among the red rocks to find the car dead after a frosty night. The 12-volt would be the first thing tested. Hypothetical only.
