About East Providence

Know East Providence.

East Providence is a Providence County city with 47,139 residents in the 2020 census, the fifth-largest in Rhode Island. It sits between the Providence and Seekonk rivers on the west and Seekonk, Massachusetts, on the east. About 19 percent of its 16.6 square miles is water. The city includes East Providence Center, Riverside and Rumford. Its history predates Providence: the National Park Service says that in the spring of 1636, Massasoit gave Roger Williams land along the Seekonk River in what is now East Providence. Today the western edge is defined by I-195 and the Washington Bridge, which RIDOT is rebuilding, with ramp and lane changes around the Taunton Avenue and Broadway areas. For EV drivers, that construction plus the state line and waterfront makes describing your location especially important.

Highways & corridors

East Providence roads we cover.

I-195

The main highway to Providence over the Washington Bridge. RIDOT's project page, read in November 2026, described overnight closures near the Taunton Avenue exit during the rebuild; check current notices before a low-range trip.

Taunton Avenue

RIDOT's rebuild page, as read in November 2026, tied a closure at this I-195 exit to demolishing the Potter Street Bridge. Work zones like that slow traffic, and a low battery can run out while waiting.

Broadway / Waterfront Drive

RIDOT says the rebuild will create four continuous westbound lanes from the Broadway interchange to the Washington Bridge, plus a fifth lane to a new Waterfront Drive off-ramp.

Washington Bridge work

As of RIDOT's project page read in November 2026, the westbound rebuild included demolishing the Potter Street Bridge near the Taunton Avenue exit. Project phases change over time, so check RIDOT's current notices before a low-range trip and allow extra time.

State line

Seekonk, Massachusetts, is on the city's eastern edge. Many streets cross the line. Tell dispatch the city and state you are in, since the same street name may exist on both sides.

Greenway parking

RIDOT says the first part of the Ten Mile River Greenway opened in 2004 between Slater Park in Pawtucket and the Kimberly Ann Rock Athletic Fields in East Providence. Use those fields as a landmark when calling.

Rumford's first settlement

Before Providence, Roger Williams and his companions first settled at Rumford. They later moved down the Seekonk River, around Fox Point and up the Providence River. The National Park Service ties that land along the Seekonk to Massasoit's 1636 grant. Today, Rumford is one of the city's three main villages, along with Riverside and East Providence Center.

Water on the west

About 3.2 of the city's 16.6 square miles are water, with the Providence and Seekonk rivers along the western edge. Bridges carry most trips toward Providence, so a closed or crowded crossing can add time. When your battery is low, choose a route that does not depend on reaching the next bridge.

Bradley Hospital

Bradley Hospital, founded in East Providence in 1931, was the nation's first psychiatric hospital exclusively for children. It is a teaching hospital for Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School. If you stop on a hospital campus, tell dispatch which lot or entrance you are near, since campus roads can be confusing.

Portuguese and Cape Verdean roots

The city has large immigrant communities from mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde. About 24 percent of residents report Portuguese ancestry. If a nearby church, bakery or club is the easiest landmark to describe, share it along with the street name.

Where you might need backup

When a East Providence charger lets you down.

Many East Providence trips depend on the Washington Bridge into Providence. When it is congested or closed overnight, reaching a charger on the other side can take much longer than usual. If your range is low, do not join the bridge backup. Find a safe spot on the East Providence side and call.

Example call

I-195 westbound before the Washington Bridge

Toyota bZ4X

Imagine a commuter heading into Providence in a slow work zone, heat on and the battery dropping to zero. In this hypothetical, they would exit before the bridge, park safely and call. Dispatch would quote $175 for enough charge to cross into Providence and reach a station.

Example call

Riverside neighborhood street

Nissan Leaf

Picture a resident who left the car parked for two weeks and now finds it will not power on. In this example, the Riverside visit would start with a $140 jump and become $195 if the pack also needed charge.
