About Fayetteville

Know Fayetteville.

Fayetteville is the seat of Washington County in northwest Arkansas and home to the University of Arkansas, the state's flagship campus. The 2020 census counted 93,949 residents, It sits on the edge of the Boston Mountains in the Ozarks, and the terrain shows on almost any drive: Mount Sequoyah rises east of downtown, and ridges and hollows break up the street grid. The city is the southern anchor of a fast-growing metro that runs north through Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville along I-49. Game days, concerts and the Dickson Street entertainment district all draw traffic into a downtown that was never designed for crowds. For a stranded EV, hills and campus congestion are the two things to plan around.

Trails that cross roads

The city says its trail network includes paved shared-use trails, bike lanes and natural-surface trails, and that the South Loop links the Razorback Regional Greenway with the Tsa-La-Gi and Town Branch trails. Expect cyclists and walkers at many crossings while you wait.

Hills near downtown

Mount Sequoyah and the surrounding ridges make many short trips steep. A car that seems fine on the flat can run out on a climb. Keep at least ten percent before heading up.

Game days

Home games and big events crowd streets around the stadium and Dickson Street. Our estimate will be longer then. Charging before you head into the area is the simplest way to avoid a stop in traffic.

West, Uptown and campus

Locals call the part of town west of I-49 west Fayetteville, while Uptown covers the homes and businesses around the Northwest Arkansas Mall on the north side. The university defines its own district of student apartments and restaurants, and College Avenue carries hundreds of shops. Naming one of these areas when you call helps us choose the right interchange.

Civil War ground

The Battle of Pea Ridge was fought northeast of town in March 1862, wounded from Prairie Grove were treated here that December, and the Action at Fayetteville on April 18, 1863 was the only major fight in town. Union headquarters were in the Tebbetts house on College Avenue. Historic sites draw visitors who park on narrow streets.

I-49 replaced the mountain road

Before the 1990s, US 71 wound through the Boston Mountains to reach Fayetteville from the south. Interstate 49 now carries that traffic on a faster grade, but the climb still costs range for drivers coming up from Fort Smith.

Where you might need backup

When a Fayetteville charger lets you down.

With much of the metro's growth to the north, fast chargers are spread along I-49 rather than concentrated in town. If the station near campus is full on a game day, the next might be a few exits away with heavy traffic between. If you are already in single digits, stop somewhere legal and call. A $175 charge is usually cheaper than a flatbed at $150 plus $10 per mile.

Highways & corridors

Fayetteville roads we cover.

I-49

Formerly I-540, the freeway was redesignated I-49 in 2014 along with US 71. It carries most metro traffic north to Springdale and Bentonville, and long grades in the Boston Mountains to the south drain a low pack quickly.

US 71B

The business route runs through older parts of town as College Avenue. Its signals and turn lanes mean many short stops, and chargers along it can fill on weekends.

US 62

The east-west route on the south side of town, heading west toward Farmington and Lincoln. Fewer fast chargers lie in that direction than toward the north metro.

Local weather & your EV

Fayetteville climate, by the numbers.

Fayetteville has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters. The source article lists a July average high of about 88.7°F. Winters bring occasional snow and ice storms that can make the hills treacherous. For EVs, summer cooling in game-day traffic and cold snaps in winter both reduce range, so a buffer matters more here than on flat ground.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Example call

I-49 northbound near the campus exits

Kia EV6

Imagine a visitor arriving from the south after the long Boston Mountains run, with the battery much lower than planned. The safest move would be the next exit, a legal spot and a call. A $175 charge would bridge the gap to a hotel charger in Uptown or downtown.

Example call

Dickson Street parking lot

Tesla Model 3

Picture a student back from winter break whose car will not respond in a lot near Dickson Street. Reviving the 12-volt would come first; if the pack had also drained over the weeks, the $195 bundle would handle both. This is hypothetical, not a real job record.
