About Huntsville

Know Huntsville.

Huntsville is now the most populous city in Alabama, counting 215,006 people in the 2020 census and an estimated 233,627 by mid-2025. It is the Madison County seat, though its limits reach into Limestone, Marshall and Morgan counties as well. The city grew up on hills north of the Tennessee River and stayed fairly small until 1941, when the Army bought land southwest of town for what became Redstone Arsenal. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the Army Aviation and Missile Command and US Space Command followed. That growth shows up on the road map: Research Park, the Toyota and Navistar plants, and new annexed land mean a lot of commuting between areas that were once separate. Monte Sano Mountain rises on the east side.

Huntsville on the record.

Population
215,006 residents in the 2020 census, with a 2025 estimate of 233,627, which makes it Alabama's largest city.[1]
Annexation
City planners say most annexations begin with property owners who ask to join; one approved request added 659.1 acres in Morgan County across the Tennessee River from Ditto Landing.[2]
Roads
The city is served by US 72, US 72 Alt., US 231, US 431 and I-565, with Alabama 53 reaching I-65 in Ardmore, Tennessee.[1]
Highways & corridors

Huntsville roads we cover.

I-565

The city's only interstate spur, linking to I-65 at Decatur. The Saturn V replica near mile 15 marks the Space & Rocket Center, and the long run west to I-65 has fewer exits than the city streets.

Memorial Pkwy

US 231 and US 431 run as Memorial Parkway, the north-south spine past Parkway Place and older shopping strips. Its frequent signals and frontage roads mean many short stops on a low battery.

US 72

Carries traffic east toward Hampton Cove and west toward Madison. The eastern side climbs around Monte Sano, so a car under ten percent can lose more than expected on the way out.

Research Park Blvd

State Route 255 serves Cummings Research Park and Bridge Street. Shift changes push a lot of cars onto it at once, and long queues at lights cost range in summer heat.

Growth at the edges

A City of Huntsville blog post explains that annexation usually starts with landowners asking to join for city services, and that the city once added 659.1 acres in Morgan County across the river from Ditto Landing. The practical point is that addresses near the edge may be inside limits now.

Mountain on the east

Monte Sano, Round Top, Chapman and Green mountains ring the east side, part of the Cumberland Plateau landforms around the valley. Trips up to Burritt on the Mountain or across to Hampton Cove include real climbs, so plan extra buffer before you start.

Winter and spring rain

Huntsville gets more than 54 inches of precipitation in an average year, and its wettest stretch runs from November into May rather than summer. Long cold rains raise energy use for heat and defrost, which narrows the margin on a short commute.

Where you might need backup

When a Huntsville charger lets you down.

With the city spread across the river valley, plateaus and annexed land in four counties, the gap between you and the next working fast charger can be bigger than it looks on a map. If a station near Bridge Street or the Parkway is full and your car is already in single digits, park where it is legal and call rather than chase the next site across town. A charge where you sit is $175; a tow is $150 plus $10 a mile.

Local weather & your EV

Huntsville climate, by the numbers.

The source article classifies Huntsville as humid subtropical, with average highs near 90°F in summer and about 49°F in winter. Most winters bring a little snow, but heavy snow is rare, though storms in 1963, 1993 and 1996 were notable. The 2011 Super Outbreak cut power for days across North Alabama. For an EV, summer cooling in traffic and occasional ice events are the two times to keep more charge than usual.

Example calls

Example call

I-565 westbound past the rocket

Kia EV9

Imagine a family leaving the Space & Rocket Center late, heading for I-65 with fewer miles than the trip needs. In this scenario the driver would take the next exit, find a lit lot and call. A $175 charge would cover the run to a station near Decatur.

Example call

Memorial Parkway near Parkway Place

Nissan Ariya

Picture a cold February morning and a car that will not start in a shopping lot even though the pack reads half full. A $140 jump would likely wake it, and the technician could test whether the 12-volt should be replaced. An illustration only, not a logged call.

    Local questions

    Huntsville, answered.

01Do you cover Madison and Hampton Cove?

We take calls across the Huntsville area. The estimate depends on distance and traffic, and we tell you honestly before you agree to anything.

02Can you reach me inside Redstone Arsenal?

Access to the arsenal is controlled. If you are inside, ask security about outside service, or meet us at a public spot outside the gate if the car can move.

03How much range does a charge add?

About 25 to 50 miles per visit, for $175. That is usually enough to reach a station or home across town.

04Can you help a gas car out of fuel?

Yes. Fuel delivery is $150 and includes three gallons, enough to reach a station nearby.

    05What if I need a tow instead?

Flatbed towing is arranged through partners at $150 plus $10 per mile. We say so on the call if charging will not work.
