About Reno

Know Reno.

Reno is the county seat and most populous city of Washoe County, with 264,165 residents in 2020, and the largest Nevada city outside the Las Vegas Valley. It sits in the Truckee River valley in the eastern Sierra foothills, about 23 miles northeast of Lake Tahoe and right by the California line. Reno and neighboring Sparks share a valley called the Truckee Meadows, a name sometimes used for the whole metro. The city calls itself "The Biggest Little City in the World". For drivers, the defining features are elevation (about 4,400 feet on the valley floor and higher in the foothills), the climb west on I-80 toward Truckee and the Donner route, and the Spaghetti Bowl interchange where I-80 meets I-580/US 395. We bring charging to all of it, from casino garages downtown to foothill neighborhoods.

Highways & corridors

Reno roads we cover.

I-80

Runs east-west through downtown and Sparks and climbs west toward Truckee, about 28 miles away. That grade is a classic range trap in winter.

I-580 / US 395

The north-south freeway through the city toward Carson City. NDOT says portions are at capacity, with increased congestion and crashes.

Spaghetti Bowl

The I-80/I-580 interchange, built 1969–71 for a much smaller population. NDOT counted about 260,000 vehicles a day in 2016.

Truckee Meadows

Pioneers began settling the Truckee Meadows in the mid-1850s, a fertile valley where the Truckee River runs from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. In 1859 Charles W. Fuller built a log toll bridge over the river to link Virginia City with the California Trail. Downtown Reno still grew up around that crossing.

Biggest Little City

Reno calls itself The Biggest Little City in the World and had 264,165 residents in 2020. Lake Tahoe is about 23 miles southwest. Mountain roads toward the lake climb steeply and drain batteries quickly, so leave with a full pack.

Divorce capital and university

For much of the 20th century, Reno drew people seeking to use Nevada’s relatively lax divorce laws. The University of Nevada, Reno is the state’s second-largest by enrollment and the flagship of the University of Nevada system. Campus lots north of downtown fill on weekdays, so plan charging ahead when you visit.

Combined region

Reno is part of a combined statistical area that includes Carson City, Douglas County and parts of Placer and Nevada counties in California. Trips between these areas cross mountain passes and state lines, so check your range before leaving the Truckee Meadows.

Born with the railroad

The Central Pacific began laying track east from Sacramento in 1863, and once its station was established, Reno officially came into being on May 9, 1868. Earlier, Charles Fuller had built a log toll bridge across the Truckee River in 1859 to link Virginia City with the California Trail. The river still runs through downtown beside the casinos.

Toward Truckee

Truckee, California, lies about 28 miles west on I-80. Pioneers on the California Trail followed the Truckee River westward before branching toward Donner Lake, where the Sierra Nevada became a formidable obstacle. That same climb now challenges EV range; plan to charge in Reno before heading up.

Spaghetti Bowl work

NDOT is rebuilding the Spaghetti Bowl and about 12 miles of nearby interstate in phases through 2039. Phase 1 restriped eastbound I-80 and widened a ramp to southbound I-580. Expect work zones with narrow shoulders, and avoid stopping inside them.

Washoe Zephyr

The article describes an afternoon downslope west wind, the "Washoe Zephyr", that can make storms on the east side severe. Strong winds add drag and make shoulder stops less comfortable. Pick a sheltered spot to wait.

Elevation and the climb

Valley-floor elevation is about 4,400 feet, with foothills higher. Snowfall ranges from roughly 19–23 inches at the airport to more in the Carson Range foothills. Heading west toward Truckee means climbing; start full.

Where you might need backup

When a Reno charger lets you down.

Many Reno trips head over the Sierra. A charger that is down on the west side of town may mean either backtracking into the city or attempting the climb. Do not start up I-80 toward Truckee with a thin margin. If your nearest working station is uphill and your range is short, call and let us add charge on the flat first.

Local weather & your EV

Reno climate, by the numbers.

Reno has a cold semi-arid climate bordering a hot-summer Mediterranean pattern to the west. The article counts about 65 days a year at 90°F or above, 6 days at 100°F or more, and around 122 days at or below freezing. Valley-floor snowfall runs about 19–23 inches, more in the foothills. Expect hot summer afternoons and many freezing mornings.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-80 westbound toward Verdi

Tesla Model X

Imagine skiers leaving Reno for Tahoe on a snowy morning, realizing the climb ahead will drain more than the dash suggested. The right call would be to stop in town before the grade and phone us. A portable charge would build enough buffer to reach a station before the pass.

Example call

Casino garage downtown

Chevrolet Silverado EV

Picture a visitor returning to a casino garage after a long weekend to find the truck unresponsive in the cold. A technician would check the auxiliary battery, jump it and add charge if needed. A hypothetical example, not a real job.
