About Aurora

Know Aurora.

Aurora sits on the Fox River in the western Chicago suburbs and, with 180,542 residents at the 2020 census, is the second most populous city in Illinois. It was founded in Kane County, but its limits now reach into DuPage, Kendall and Will counties, so a call from the east side and one from downtown can be in different counties. The city is not a county seat. I-88, the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway, crosses the north side, and Illinois 59 and Eola Road carry traffic on the east side. Downtown on the river, the Paramount Theatre and the Hollywood Casino, opened in 1993, draw evening crowds. Phillips Park, Metra service to Chicago and a long history on the Lincoln Highway complete the picture.

Local weather & your EV

Aurora climate, by the numbers.

The monthly table shows July highs near 84°F and January lows around 16°F, with about 39.5 inches of precipitation a year. Fox Valley summers run warm and sticky, and winter brings snow, wind and long stretches below freezing. For EVs, winter is the challenge: expect noticeably shorter range, slower charging and more 12-volt trouble from December through February.

Highways & corridors

Aurora roads we cover.

I-88 (Reagan Tollway)

Crosses the north side of the city toward Chicago and west toward the Quad Cities. Open stretches west of Aurora have long gaps between exits, and winter crosswinds sap range.

Illinois 59

A busy north-south retail corridor on the east side, shared with Naperville. Signal after signal in winter traffic lets the heater eat into the battery.

Eola Road

Another east-side arterial near the newer neighborhoods. Development is spread out, so the nearest charger can be several miles away.

Driving notes

Range in Aurora.

Four counties, one city

Because Aurora reaches into Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties, local services can differ from one neighborhood to the next. For us it does not matter, but the cross streets do. Give two of them when you call.

Cold Januaries

The monthly table shows January lows around 16°F. Cold batteries lose range and charge slowly until warm. Precondition while plugged in at home, and keep at least a 20 percent buffer in the coldest weeks.

Lincoln Highway history

The city's own history pages describe the 1919 Army convoy welcomed at McCarty Park and an auto camp near Phillips Park in the early 1920s. The road still carries traffic through town, on a schedule of signals rather than open highway.

Stolp Island downtown

Aurora began as two villages: East Aurora, incorporated in 1845, and West Aurora, organized in 1854. Because representatives could not agree which side of the river should hold public buildings, most were built on or around Stolp Island in the middle of the Fox River. The historic downtown still centers there, so a call from downtown should name the bridge or island street.

City of Lights

In 1881 Aurora was among the first U.S. cities to light its streets entirely with electricity, and in 1908 it adopted the nickname City of Lights. Electric streetlights are now universal, but the downtown is still busy at night, with the Paramount and the casino on the river. Plan evening charging before a show.

Three sides of town

The city is often described as having three regions: the West Side, the East Side and the Far East Side, also called Fox Valley. Distances across the city are long, and the Far East Side's retail roads are miles from downtown. Tell dispatch which region you are in along with the cross streets.

Two founding families

After the Black Hawk War, the McCarty brothers settled on both sides of the Fox River in 1834, then sold the west side to the Lake brothers, who opened a mill. The rail line that grew from early local lines became the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy in 1855. The river and the rails still divide the city into distinct sides, which is why the bank you are on matters when you call. The far eastern part of Aurora in DuPage County is served by Indian Prairie School District 204, formed in 1972.

Where you might need backup

When a Aurora charger lets you down.

Aurora covers parts of four counties, and the east-side retail corridors and downtown are miles apart. If the station near Route 59 is full on a cold night, the next one may be across the river or on the tollway. Do not set out in single digits. Stop where it is legal, note the nearest cross street and county if you know it, and call.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

Route 59 on a January evening

Chevrolet Equinox EV

Imagine a commuter running errands after work on a 5°F evening, the heater on and the range falling to three miles near a shopping center. In this scenario the driver would park in the lot and call. A technician would charge the car where it sat, giving it enough range to return to the far east side.

Example call

Metra lot downtown

Volkswagen ID.4

Picture a rider coming back from Chicago late to an ID.4 that will not unlock after a cold day in the lot. Most likely the small 12-volt had run flat. A technician would jump it and confirm the car wakes. A hypothetical example only.
