About St. Petersburg

Know St. Petersburg.

St. Petersburg sits on the Pinellas peninsula and had 258,308 residents in 2020, the fifth largest city in Florida and the largest in the state that is not a county seat. Water surrounds most of it. The article notes connections to Tampa by causeways and bridges across Tampa Bay, and to Bradenton in the south by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which carries I-275 over the mouth of the bay. Spurs I-175 and I-375 reach the north and south edges of downtown. Central Avenue runs through the core, Tropicana Field and the Dali Museum anchor the waterfront districts, and Albert Whitted Airport sits on the bay downtown. North of the city, Pinellas County manages Weedon Island Preserve on the shore of Tampa Bay.

Local weather & your EV

St. Petersburg climate, by the numbers.

The article classifies the climate as humid subtropical with some tropical monsoon traits and a defined rainy season from June through September; maritime influence from the Gulf and Tampa Bay creates tropical microclimates. The monthly table shows highs near 91°F in July and August and January lows around 54°F, with about 52 inches of rain. For EVs, heat is the steady cost and summer storms the unpredictable one.

Driving notes

Range in St. Petersburg.

Bridges are commitments

Three bridges reach Tampa and the Skyway reaches Manatee County. Each is several miles of open water. If the range estimate is close, it is not close enough. Charge first, or call us from the near shore.

Storm surge and the preserve

Pinellas County describes Weedon Island Preserve as a natural floodplain that cuts storm surge and protects nearby development. The bay shore floods in big storms. Do not drive into standing water, and move the car to higher ground before a storm.

Rainy season

The article describes a defined rainy season from June through September. Afternoon downpours slow traffic on I-275 and flood low streets. If you are low on charge, run errands earlier in the day or wait out the storm parked.

The Fourth Street corridor

Fourth Street runs from downtown north to Gandy Boulevard and is lined with restaurants and bars from fast food to fine dining. It is the main north-south spine for many errands and connects directly to the Gandy Bridge. If you are low on the north end, stop along Fourth Street rather than continuing onto the bridge.

Old Northeast and Snell Isle

North of downtown, the Historic Old Northeast and Snell Isle hold Mediterranean-style historic and waterfront homes, parks and small shops. Streets are residential and quiet, and many homes have older electrical service. Visitors staying there in rentals sometimes find no home charger; plan a public charging stop before you settle in for the evening.

Grand Central and Kenwood

West of downtown, the Grand Central District is known for cafes, galleries, restaurants and bars in Craftsman-era buildings, and Historic Kenwood holds bungalow streets nearby. Central Avenue ties them together. Evening parking is mostly on the street, so give the block number when you call.

Highways & corridors

St. Petersburg roads we cover.

I-275

Runs the length of the city, crossing to Tampa on the Howard Frankland Bridge and south to Manatee County on the Sunshine Skyway. Both are long spans with nowhere to stop.

I-175 / I-375

Short spurs that bring traffic from I-275 to the southern and northern edges of downtown. Event nights near Tropicana Field and the waterfront can back them up.

Gandy Bridge

Its 1924 opening first gave the city direct road access to Tampa and central Florida. Today it is one of three crossings, landing at Gandy Boulevard in north St. Petersburg. Check your range before crossing; turning back on a bridge is not an option.

Where you might need backup

When a St. Petersburg charger lets you down.

On a peninsula, the next charger is never on the other side of a bridge. If the station you planned on is out of service and the pack is low, stay on the St. Petersburg side and call. Driving onto the Howard Frankland, Gandy or Skyway in search of a working stall in Tampa or Bradenton is the single riskiest choice a low-range driver can make here.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-275 southbound before the Skyway

Chevrolet Blazer EV

Imagine a driver headed to Sarasota who noticed only 12 miles left as the toll plaza approached. In this scenario the driver would exit before the bridge and call from a safe lot. A mobile charge would add enough to cross the Skyway and reach a station on the far side.

Example call

Downtown after a waterfront event

Nissan Ariya

Picture a couple leaving a downtown festival, stuck in slow traffic around I-175, with the range falling to three miles. They would park legally near Central Avenue and call. A technician would set up curbside and add enough for the drive back to the Old Northeast. A hypothetical illustration.
