Know Erie.
Erie sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie, across from Ontario, and had 94,831 residents in the 2020 census, making it the largest city in Northwestern Pennsylvania. It is about 100 miles northeast of Cleveland, 90 miles southwest of Buffalo and 128 miles north of Pittsburgh. The French built Fort Presque Isle here in 1753, named for the peninsula that now forms Presque Isle State Park. Mill Creek runs through the city, including the Erie Zoo grounds, and flooded downtown in 1915. The Bayfront Parkway separates downtown from a waterfront redeveloped with Dobbins Landing, the Bicentennial Tower and the Bayfront Convention Center. For EV drivers, winter matters most. The city sits in the snow belt from Cleveland to Syracuse, and the article cites a 50-car pileup on I-90 in January 2007 caused by whiteouts.

Three ways we help.
Erie climate, by the numbers.
Erie's climate is classed as humid continental by some systems and humid subtropical by others. It is in the snow belt that runs from Cleveland to Syracuse. Winters are moderately cold with heavy lake-effect snow, and the 1991 to 2020 normal seasonal snowfall is 104.3 inches. The lake keeps summers mild, with only about 4 days a year reaching 90°F. For EVs, winter drives range loss through cold batteries, cabin heat and slow traffic, and snowbanks and whiteouts increase the need for winch-outs.

Range in Erie.
Snow belt winters
The 1991 to 2020 normal snowfall is 104.3 inches. Mild spells melt some of it, then the next band can bring more. Each winter trip should start with more charge than you expect to need, since heat, wipers and slow traffic all use energy.
Presque Isle trips
The state park says Presque Isle connects to the mainland four miles west of downtown and is a day-use park. A peninsula drive and return can take longer than expected on a cold or windy day. Check your charge before you go.
Mill Creek and downtown
Mill Creek runs through much of the city and flooded downtown in August 1915. Roads near it can still be affected by heavy rain or melting snow, so choose higher routes when the battery is low.
Mill Creek underground
After the 1915 flood destroyed 225 houses and killed 36 people, Mayor Miles Brown Kitts had Mill Creek moved into a larger culvert. It runs more than two miles beneath the city before emptying into Presque Isle Bay on the lower east side. If you stop near the bay on that side, give the nearest cross street when you call.
Perry Square grid
Downtown is laid out in a grid around Perry Square. South of 38th Street, the grid gives way to curving suburban roads. Little Italy on the west side centers on West 18th Street, and Millionaires Row on West 6th Street includes 19th-century mansions such as the Watson-Curtze Mansion. A numbered street makes your location easy to find.
The Gauge War
In the mid-19th century, three railroad track gauges met in Erie. When officials proposed a standard gauge, residents led by the mayor burned bridges, tore up tracks and rioted to protect the jobs created by the transfers. The city remains a transportation crossroads, now served by I-90, I-79 and I-86.
Erie roads we cover.
Erie has six exits on the interstate that runs from Boston to Seattle. In whiteouts, visibility can drop quickly, so leave the highway early when the battery is low.
Begins in Erie and heads south to Pittsburgh. Leaving town with a thin charge on a winter night can turn into a long, cold stop.
The parkway separates downtown from the waterfront. East of town, I-86, the Southern Tier Expressway, begins at I-90 near Harborcreek.
When a Erie charger lets you down.
In heavy lake-effect snow, the issue may not be finding a charger but reaching it safely. A station across town can become a slow trip through whiteout conditions. If your range is low and snow is falling hard, do not set out for a distant station. Park somewhere safe, stay in the car with the hazards on and call.

I-90 eastbound in a lake-effect band
Tesla Model 3
Imagine a driver heading toward the I-86 split as visibility falls and the battery drops faster than expected with the heater on. In this hypothetical, they would exit, park at a lit business and call. Dispatch would explain how weather could affect arrival time.
Lot near Dobbins Landing
Chevrolet Bolt EUV
Picture a visitor returning on a windy evening to find the car dead near the waterfront. In this example, the technician would jump the 12-volt for $140 and, if the pack were also low, add a charge for $195.

Erie, answered.
01Do you help during lake-effect storms?
Yes, when roads are safe enough to drive. Arrival may be slower in heavy bands, and dispatch will tell you that honestly.
02Can you reach Presque Isle?
Tell us where you are in the park. Access and seasonal rules may affect timing.
03What does a winch-out cost?
$200. When the car still cannot move under its own power, a partner tow is $150 plus $10 a mile.
04How much range do you add?
About 25 to 50 miles in normal conditions. Deep cold can reduce that.
05Do you serve I-79 south of the city?
Give the direction and nearest exit. We will confirm coverage and timing when you call.
