Local weather & your EV

Rockford climate, by the numbers.

The monthly table shows July highs near 84°F and January lows around 14.5°F, with about 37 inches of precipitation. Summers are warm and humid; winters are long and cold with regular snow. For EVs, winter is the main concern: range drops, charging slows and 12-volt batteries struggle on the coldest mornings.

Driving notes

Range in Rockford.

East side and west side

The Rock River divides the city, and many errands cross it. When you call, say which side of the river you are on and the nearest cross streets. It shapes the route our technician takes.

A prairie in the city

The state says Searls Park Prairie is a 129-acre nature preserve of black-soil prairie in northwest Rockford, reached from West State Street via Central Avenue. Its lots are quiet. Do not leave with a nearly empty battery after dark.

The coldest of the region

The monthly table shows January lows near 14.5°F, colder than the Chicago suburbs. Cold batteries charge slowly and lose range. Keep a larger buffer in midwinter, and park in a garage when you can.

The Forest City

Rockford was chartered as a city on January 3, 1852, and the New York Tribune called it the Forest City a year later, after its heavily wooded neighborhoods. Tree-lined streets look lovely but drop branches in storms and ice. After a big storm, check for blocked streets before you set out with a low battery.

Furniture and machinery

Rockford became known for heavy machinery and furniture; Swedish furniture cooperatives helped make it second in U.S. furniture production, behind Grand Rapids. Like other Rust Belt cities, it saw industrial decline later in the 20th century. Former industrial areas can be quiet after dark, so do not count on an open business nearby if you run low there.

Gardens and cottages

Visitors come for Anderson Japanese Gardens, Klehm Arboretum and Tinker Swiss Cottage. These sites sit in quiet, wooded settings, sometimes away from main roads. Charge before an evening visit, and save the address so you can give it to dispatch quickly if you need help.

Museums downtown

The Burpee Museum of Natural History holds Jane, described as the most complete juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex in the world, and a Triceratops named Homer. The Discovery Center Museum, also in the city, has more than 250 hands-on exhibits and a planetarium. Families spend hours there, and a cold car left on the street can lose more charge than expected. Give the museum name when you call.

Highways & corridors

Rockford roads we cover.

I-90 (Northwest Tollway)

Runs along the east side of the city toward Chicago and north to Wisconsin. Long open stretches and winter crosswinds make it a costly road in cold weather.

US 20 bypass

Built in 1956, it forms the city's south border and links to the airport area. Exits are spaced out, so a low car may have farther to go than expected.

Illinois 2 (Main Street)

Follows the Rock River through the city. Signals and riverside traffic slow it down, but it offers plenty of safe places to pull over.

State DOT
Where you might need backup

When a Rockford charger lets you down.

Rockford is the last large city for a long way west and north, and the drive to the Chicago suburbs on I-90 is a long one. If your planned station is out and the pack is low, do not set out on the tollway hoping for another. Stop in town, note the cross streets and call. That is easier than waiting on a cold shoulder.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-90 southbound toward Chicago

Hyundai Ioniq 6

Imagine a driver leaving Rockford on a 5°F morning with less buffer than planned, the range dropping fast against a crosswind. In this scenario the driver would quit the tollway at the next plaza exit and park off the frontage road. A technician would drive out from town and add enough range to get back to a Rockford station.

Example call

Downtown after a show

Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Picture a couple leaving the Coronado on a winter night to a Bolt that will not wake after hours on a frozen street. The 12-volt would be the likely cause. A technician would revive it on the street and advise replacing the battery if it tested weak. A hypothetical example only.
