Know Pawtucket.
Pawtucket is a Providence County city with 75,604 residents in the 2020 census, the fourth-largest in Rhode Island, packed into about 9 square miles. It sits in three drainage basins: the Blackstone River, including the Seekonk, the Moshassuck and the Ten Mile. It is home to Slater Mill, a textile mill tied to the start of the American Industrial Revolution. The National Park Service says the first wage workers' strike in the United States happened here in 1824. Land west of the Blackstone was once part of North Providence, while the east side was settled as part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. That eastern area joined Providence County in 1862. I-95 bends through downtown in S-curves, designed to avoid certain buildings, and US 1 also crosses the western part of the city. For EV drivers, the compact city brings short trips, tight streets and an interstate with some of its slowest posted speeds in Rhode Island.

Three ways we help.
Range in Pawtucket.
S-curves
I-95 through downtown has sharp bends and low posted speeds. A stalled car there is hard for others to see. If the low-battery warning appears, take the next exit and wait on a city street instead.
Mill-era streets
Many streets near Slater Mill and the Blackstone are narrow, with tight parking. Give the exact street and nearest corner when you call so the technician can plan where to stop.
Greenway access
RIDOT says the 3-mile Ten Mile River Greenway connects parks and fields, including Slater Park in the northeast corner of the city. Note which park entrance you used if you stop nearby.
The falls and early settlers
Before European settlement, Native people fished for salmon below Pawtucket Falls. Joseph Jenckes Jr. bought about 60 acres near the falls in 1671 and built a sawmill and forge, but the town was destroyed in King Philip's War. By 1775, muskets, linseed oil, potash and ships were being made here. The falls still mark the center of downtown.
A shifted border
Land east of the Blackstone was settled as part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, and became Rhode Island territory on March 1, 1862, ending a dispute that lasted 225 years. East and West Pawtucket did not merge into one city until 1886. The city still borders Seekonk and Attleboro, so confirm which state you are in when calling near the line.
McCoy and the new stadium
The Pawtucket Red Sox played at McCoy Stadium from 1970 to 2020. The longest professional baseball game, 33 innings, was played there in 1981, and demolition began in 2025. Rhode Island FC now plays at Centreville Bank Stadium near the Seekonk River. On match days, arrive with extra range for slow traffic out of nearby lots.
Parks and bikeways
Slater Park in the Darlington neighborhood is the city's largest park, with a Looff carousel and the historic Daggett House. Veterans Memorial Park covers 20 acres in Fairlawn, and Festival Pier on the Seekonk has a boat launch. Short sections of the Blackstone River Bikeway, part of the East Coast Greenway, are already complete.
Lorraine Mills and the arts district
The city created an Arts District in 1999 and holds a citywide Arts Festival each September. Lorraine Mills, a converted mill on the east side, houses Mixed Magic Theatre, the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative and Crooked Current Brewery. On performance nights, nearby parking fills quickly, so include the mill name when calling.
Pawtucket roads we cover.
Planners bent the interstate into S-curves near downtown to preserve buildings, and the article says posted speeds there are some of the slowest on I-95. There is little room to stop.
Runs with I-95 through the western part of the city. It is a busy local route with signals, stores and short gaps between intersections.
RIDOT cites the Slater Park entrance on Armistice Boulevard as the start of the 2014 greenway extension. It is a useful landmark for northeast Pawtucket.
When a Pawtucket charger lets you down.
Pawtucket is small, so another charger is often close. The challenge is getting there through I-95's tight curves or across a river bridge with almost no range left. If the station you planned to use is down, do not risk stopping in the S-curves. Park on a side street or in a lot and call.
Hypothetical, on real roads.

I-95 southbound through the S-curves
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Imagine a driver heading toward Providence in heavy traffic, watching the battery fall to zero in the curves. In this hypothetical, they would exit to a side street, park safely and call. Dispatch would quote $175 for a top-up big enough to get into Providence or back home.
Lot near Slater Mill
Mini Cooper SE
Picture a visitor finishing a tour of the mill only to find the car will not unlock. In this example, the technician would handle a $140 lockout and check the 12-volt battery before leaving.
