Know New Haven.
New Haven, with 134,023 residents in the 2020 census, sits on New Haven Harbor along Long Island Sound. It was laid out on the Nine Square Plan, with a 16-acre Green at the center, and is home to Yale University. East Rock and West Rock ridges frame the city. Union Station, a Beaux-Arts building, serves Metro-North, the Hartford Line, Shore Line East and Amtrak, with about 175 trains on weekdays. I-95 and I-91 meet near the harbor. For EV drivers, the dense core and highway interchanges shape most stalls.

Three ways we help.
New Haven roads we cover.
Runs along the coast near Long Wharf. Traffic toward New York and Boston backs up, and idling drains batteries.
Heads north toward Hartford from its junction with I-95. Merges near the harbor are tight.
The Oak Street Connector runs a few blocks into downtown from I-91 before ending on surface streets.
Route 15 runs parallel to I-95 west of the city and tunnels through West Rock.
Range in New Haven.
West Rock Ridge
State parks officials say the ridge rises from about 400 feet at South Summit in New Haven to about 700 feet in Bethany, and the road to the South Overlook is open from Memorial Day to late October. Buses of 30 or more are not allowed.
Lunch trucks at Long Wharf
Food trucks cluster on Long Wharf Drive near I-95 exits at lunchtime. Expect crowds and slow traffic there midday.
Rail station
Union Station sees about 175 trains on weekdays. If your car stops in a nearby garage, give us the level and entrance.
Quinnipiac to New Haven
The Quinnipiac lived around the harbor before Puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton sailed in during April 1638. By 1640 the town had its nine-square grid and the name New Haven. On July 5, 1779, about 2,600 British and loyalist troops raided the town. The Green at the center of that grid is still the reference point locals use.
Highways through neighborhoods
Urban renewal under Mayor Richard C. Lee began in 1954, and Wooster Square and Fair Haven were cut by I-95 along Long Wharf, I-91 and the Oak Street Connector. Those highways still split neighborhoods, so a car stopped on one side may be a long detour from the other.
Winchester district
The New Haven Arms Company became Winchester Repeating Arms, which made guns in the city until 2006. Many former plant buildings now form the Winchester Repeating Arms Company Historic District, with newer residential uses and tight parking.
Big building, small streets
360 State Street, a 32-story tower with 500 units, is the largest residential building in Connecticut. High-rise garages like it are common sites for cars that sit for days.
Yale and the economy
Yale is the city's largest employer and biggest taxpayer, and health care, professional services and retail round out the economy. Hospital and campus garages are busy around the clock, so tell us the garage and level.
Hamden and the north
The area north of the original grid stayed Quinnipiac until 1678, when it became Hamden. Whitney Avenue, named for Eli Whitney's factory area at Whitneyville, still links the two, passing East Rock on the way.
Metro area
New Haven is the third-largest city in Connecticut and anchors a metro area of about 577,000. Commuters arrive from all directions on I-95, I-91 and the Wilbur Cross Parkway.
Regicides and the ridge
After the restoration of Charles II, judges who had signed his father's death warrant hid in the West Rock hills northwest of town, and later John Dixwell joined them. Dixwell is now the name of a neighborhood west of downtown, along with Dwight, The Hill and City Point by the water.
East Rock and West Rock
East Rock and West Rock, reddish basalt trap rock ridges rising northeast and northwest of the city, frame the skyline. Roads up to their parks climb steeply and close seasonally, so arrive with a buffer and check gates before heading up.
Harbor neighborhoods
City Point is a historic waterfront neighborhood south of downtown, while Fair Haven lies to the east along the Quinnipiac River. Both are reached by narrow streets where a stalled car blocks traffic quickly.
When a New Haven charger lets you down.
Downtown chargers fill quickly, and the next may be across the I-91 and I-95 interchange. If you are low and the station is busy, do not keep circling the nine squares. Park and call. A charge where you sit beats the $150 flatbed base and per-mile charges.
New Haven climate, by the numbers.
New Haven's coastal climate brings cold winters with less snow than inland Hartford and warm, humid summers. Winds off the Sound can make cold days feel harsher. For EVs, winter mornings and summer traffic in the heat both reduce range.
