Know Dover.
Dover is the capital of Delaware and the seat of Kent County, with 39,403 residents in the 2020 census. William Penn founded it as a court town in 1683, and the capital moved here from New Castle in 1777. Caesar Rodney, Delaware's wartime leader during the Revolution, lived in Dover. The city sits on the St. Jones River, and Dover Air Force Base lies to the southeast. The Green historic district and Legislative Hall form the government center. For EV drivers, the main concerns are the toll road and Dupont Highway traffic.

Three ways we help.
Dover climate, by the numbers.
Dover has a humid climate with about 25 days a year at or above 90°F. Winters are mild with occasional snow. For EVs, summer heat in traffic is the main drain.

Range in Dover.
Legislative Hall
The Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs says Legislative Hall replaced the Old State House as the capitol building in 1933. Session days bring extra traffic downtown.
Air base
Dover Air Force Base lies southeast of the city behind controlled gates. We cannot drive onto the base without clearance, so a car that dies inside needs to be pushed or towed to a public lot by base arrangement first.
Summer heat
The source article counts about 25 days a year at or above 90°F. Waiting in the heat drains energy for cooling.
Penn's court town
William Penn founded Dover in 1683 as the court town for Kent County, and the General Assembly laid out the town in 1717. The capital moved here from New Castle in 1777. Caesar Rodney, Delaware's wartime leader, lived here, and a cenotaph to him stands in Christ Episcopal Church cemetery near the Green.
Race weekend
Dover Motor Speedway hosts a NASCAR weekend in May, drawing about 65,000 spectators, down from as many as 140,000 in earlier decades. Hotels sell out and fans camp in RVs beside the track. Bally's Dover harness racing sits inside the NASCAR oval. Expect slow roads and full chargers that weekend.
Campuses
Delaware State University is the state's only historically black university and a land-grant school; it also runs a downtown campus on the former Wesley College grounds. Delaware Tech's Terry Campus is in Dover too. Campus lots are common places for cars to sit for days.
Silver Lake and storms
Silver Lake Park covers 182 acres with a lakeside path, fishing and boating. In August 2020, Hurricane Isaias spawned a tornado that tracked 35.78 miles, the longest in state records, damaging trees and roofs in Dover. Tropical storm warnings are a time to stay put.
Underground Railroad stop
Dover was a stop on the Underground Railroad because of its position between slave-holding Maryland and free Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and a large Quaker community pushed for emancipation in the early nineteenth century.
Winters on the coastal plain
Dover sits on the St. Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain. Winters are moderated by the Delaware Bay, with about eight or nine days a year that stay below freezing. Those mornings are when weak 12-volt batteries give out.
Growth and the base
The article calls Dover one of the fastest-growing areas in Delaware, helped by a low cost of living. Besides state and county government, Dover Air Force Base in the southeast corporate limits is a major employer, with two airlift wings.
Historic register
Dover holds many listed historic places, including the Dover Green Historic District, the Old Statehouse, Loockerman Hall, the Governor's Mansion and the John Dickinson House. Many sit on narrow downtown streets.
Amish country to the west
An Amish community of 11 church districts and about 1,650 people lives west of Dover. The Amish first settled in Kent County in 1915. Rural roads there carry horse-drawn buggies, so pull fully off the road if your car stops, and expect slower travel for us.
Parks across the city
Dover maintains three larger parks and 27 smaller ones. Schutte Park offers athletic fields, and youth tournaments bring crowds on weekends. Park lots are fine places to wait for a charge; tell us the field or pavilion.
Dover roads we cover.
The toll road runs along the east side. Long stretches between exits make running low risky.
Dupont Highway runs through the city with signals and commercial stops.
Heads west from downtown. Leaving town on it means fewer chargers.
When a Dover charger lets you down.
Dover has fewer chargers than larger cities, and the DE 1 toll road has long gaps between exits. If your station is busy or down, do not head out hoping for the next. Park and call. Range brought to a downtown lot avoids a flatbed's $150 base and mileage to Wilmington.

DE 1 near the Dover exits
Hyundai Ioniq 6
Imagine a beach traveler heading south with the battery dropping faster than planned. Taking the next DE 1 exit into a lit lot on Bay Road, the driver would phone in. With 25 to 50 miles added, a fast charger near the city would be in reach.
Parking near the Green
Nissan Leaf
Picture a legislative staffer leaving Legislative Hall after a late session to a dashboard that stays dark. The 12-volt would be tested and revived. Hypothetical only.
