Know Newark.
Newark is New Jersey's most populous city, with 311,549 residents in 2020 and an estimated 323,808 in 2025, and the seat of Essex County. Settled in 1666 by Puritans from New Haven Colony, it sits at the mouth of the Passaic River on Newark Bay, making its waterfront part of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Port Newark–Elizabeth is the primary container terminal of the busiest port on the East Coast, and Newark Liberty International Airport was the first municipal commercial airport in the country. Branch Brook Park in the North Ward is the nation's first county park. We meet drivers at the airport, port, downtown and neighborhoods.

Three ways we help.
Newark roads we cover.
Runs past the port and airport. The article notes the January freezing line through Newark roughly follows it.
Crosses the city east-west toward the Newark Bay Extension and the Holland Tunnel.
Runs west from downtown past the North Ward. Branch Brook Park begins at Route 280.
Follows the Passaic River through downtown. Congestion common.
When a Newark charger lets you down.
Newark's chargers cluster near the airport, port and downtown. If one is down, the next may be across a congested highway. Call before attempting a long detour.
Newark climate, by the numbers.
Newark lies between humid subtropical and humid continental climate zones; the article says the January freezing isotherm roughly follows the New Jersey Turnpike. Average seasonal snowfall is 31.5 inches, though some years bring little and others major nor'easters. Expect variable winter range loss.

Range in Newark.
Marshland to airport
In the 1920s Newark reclaimed 68 acres of marshland for what became Newark Liberty International Airport and later Port Newark. The airport, port and highways share low, flat ground beside Newark Bay. Wind off the bay can be strong in winter, which adds to cold-weather range loss on the approach roads.
Branch Brook cherry blossoms
Branch Brook Park is the oldest county park in the country and holds the nation’s largest collection of ornamental cherry trees, over 5,000. Blossom season brings heavy crowds and tight parking around the park, so plan your range if you visit then.
Port Newark–Elizabeth
Port Newark–Elizabeth is the primary container terminal of the busiest seaport on the East Coast. Truck traffic around the port is constant, and roads there have few safe places to stop. If you run low there, get to a lot before calling.
A basin to the Passaic
Newark is essentially a basin sloping toward the Passaic River. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the wealthy built on the ridges of Forest Hill, High Street and Weequahic. Hilly neighborhoods mean slightly higher energy use.
Universities and culture
Rutgers–Newark, NJIT and Seton Hall’s law school are in the city, along with NJPAC, Symphony Hall, the Prudential Center and the Newark Museum of Art. Event nights fill garages downtown, so charge before you go.
The airport’s place in history
Newark Liberty International Airport began as the country’s first municipal commercial airport. Today it is one of the region’s busiest, and its long-term lots are where many EVs sit for days while their owners travel. Check your 12-volt health before a long trip, or expect to call us for a jump when you return.
Puritan founding
Newark was settled in 1666 by Puritans from the New Haven Colony, making it one of the oldest cities in the country. The intersection of Broad and Market Streets has long been the heart of downtown. Today the city is the second-most racially diverse municipality in New Jersey, behind neighboring Jersey City.
The Ironbound
The Ironbound, in the East Ward, was the center of Newark’s 19th-century industry. It has dense streets and limited parking. If your EV stops there, give us the street and cross street, since the neighborhood’s blocks are short and busy.
PATH and Penn Station
PATH trains link Newark Penn Station with Lower Manhattan and Hoboken, giving stranded drivers a way to keep moving. If your car is stuck near Penn Station and you have somewhere to be, the train can carry you while we come to the vehicle.
Wards and squares
Newark’s Central Ward contains the original squares, Lincoln Park, Military Park and Harriet Tubman Square, along with NJIT, Rutgers–Newark and Essex County College. The East Ward holds much of downtown and the Ironbound, the 19th-century industrial heart. If you call from one of these areas, naming the ward or square helps.
Universities and hospitals
Rutgers–Newark, NJIT, Seton Hall’s law school and University Hospital all operate in the city. Students and staff park for long stretches in campus decks, and cars left for days often need a jump. The ward and building name is the fastest way to direct a technician.
Corporate headquarters
Prudential, PSEG, Panasonic North America, Audible and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey are among the companies headquartered in Newark. Corporate garages downtown can have height limits and gated entry; tell us how to get in and whether we need a visitor pass before we arrive.
Arts venues
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Symphony Hall, the Prudential Center and the Newark Museum of Art all draw evening crowds. When those events let out, nearby streets back up. Charge before you go so that the wait in a garage exit line does not leave you short.
Branch Brook Park
Essex County Parks says the 360-acre park stretches nearly four miles from Route 280 in Newark to Mill Street in Belleville. Each spring more than 5,000 cherry trees bloom, drawing thousands of visitors. Park drives get busy during the festival.
Port and airport traffic
Port Newark is the largest container port on the East Coast, and the airport is one of the busiest. Truck and airport traffic make shoulder stops risky. Exit to a side road if possible.
Snow and nor'easters
Newark averages 31.5 inches of snow a season, and some years bring major nor'easters. Cold reduces range, so plug in when storms are forecast.

I-78 near the airport
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Imagine a traveler leaving the airport on a cold evening, heat on, as the range drops faster than expected. Taking the next exit and stopping safely, then calling, would be right. A portable charge would add range for the drive.
