Know Savannah.
Savannah, the seat of Chatham County, was founded in 1733 on the Savannah River and is the oldest city in Georgia. It served as the colonial capital and the first state capital, and today it is an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. The 2020 census counted 147,780 residents. The highway pattern is distinctive: I-16 ends downtown at Liberty and Montgomery streets, I-95 runs just west of the city past Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, and I-516 forms an urban perimeter from the southside to the industrial port area. In the historic district, squares and one-way streets set the pace. River Street, Forsyth Park and the road out to Tybee Island are where visitors spend their days.

Three ways we help.
Savannah climate, by the numbers.
The monthly table shows July highs near 92°F and January lows around 40°F, with about 48 inches of precipitation. Summers are hot and humid with frequent afternoon rain; winters are mild. For EVs, heat is the steady drain, and the low-lying coastal setting means summer storms and tropical systems can flood streets quickly.

Squares and one-way streets
The historic grid of squares slows traffic, and curbs are lined with meters and loading zones. Give dispatch the square name or the nearest intersection. It is the fastest way for a technician to find you downtown.
Rain and drainage
The city says rainwater runs in its own system straight into nearby creeks, marshes and rivers. Heavy summer storms can overwhelm low streets. Do not drive through standing water, and move a low car to higher ground before a storm.
Near the port
The Port of Savannah and the I-516 industrial corridor run around the clock with heavy trucks. If you stop near them, pull fully off the road and stay in the car with hazards on until help arrives.
The Oglethorpe Plan
Downtown keeps the town plan James Oglethorpe laid out after settlers landed at Yamacraw Bluff on February 12, 1733, where Tomochichi greeted them. The grid of squares and wards slows traffic and leaves few curbs for service vehicles. Pull into a legal space on a side street near a square, and name the square when you call.
A large landmark district
The historic district, its 22 squares and the Victorian Historic District together form one of the largest National Historic Landmark districts in the country. Many visitors walk the whole area and leave their car parked all day. Heat in summer can drain the 12-volt in a car that sits for days; start it once a day if you can.
Islands and resort towns
Beyond downtown, the shrimping village of Thunderbolt and old summer resort communities such as Isle of Hope, Beaulieu and Vernonburg sit along the marshes. Skidaway Island, an affluent suburb to the south, holds a state park, the University of Georgia Aquarium and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. These places sit at the end of long roads through the marsh. Leave with a comfortable buffer if you plan to visit.
Savannah roads we cover.
Ends in downtown Savannah at Liberty and Montgomery streets. Drivers coming off a long run from Macon land directly in the historic grid, where curb space is tight and streets are one-way.
Runs north-south just west of the city, serving the airport and meeting I-16. Long rural stretches in both directions make it a poor place to bet on the last few miles.
An urban perimeter road from the southside at DeRenne Avenue to the industrial port area, meeting Veterans Parkway and I-16. Truck traffic near the port is heavy at all hours.
When a Savannah charger lets you down.
The historic district is compact, but its chargers are often in garages that fill with visitors. If you arrive on I-16 with a low pack and the garage you planned on is full, park legally and call instead of circling the squares. Heading out to Tybee Island with a few miles left is the riskier choice: the road is long, low and has few places to stop.

I-16 arriving downtown
Volkswagen ID.Buzz
Imagine a family arriving from Atlanta on I-16, the range at five miles as the interstate ends at Liberty Street, and the hotel garage full. In this scenario the driver would park legally on a nearby block and call. A technician would come to that block and charge the van enough to get to a station near the interstate.
The road out to Tybee Island
Rivian R1T
Picture a couple heading to the beach late in the day who realized the truck would not make the round trip. The driver would pull off at a safe spot before the island and call. A technician would add enough for the trip back. An illustration, not an actual call.
