About Chicago

Know Chicago.

Chicago is the most populous city in Illinois and the third largest in the country, with 2,746,388 residents at the 2020 census. It sits on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan in Cook County. The Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways are the busiest state-maintained routes in Illinois, and the Chicago Skyway, part of I-90, is the only toll road inside the city. Lake Shore Drive follows a large part of the waterfront. O'Hare and Midway airports, the Loop, Navy Pier and Millennium Park bring constant traffic. The article also notes that winter cyclones departing to the south sometimes push northeast winds across the lake and bring the city lake-effect snow, and measurable snow can fall into April.

Local weather & your EV

Chicago climate, by the numbers.

The monthly table shows July highs near 85°F and January lows around 19.5°F, with about 41 inches of precipitation. Lake Michigan moderates the shoreline but also delivers lake-effect snow. For EVs, Chicago winters mean a real cost: shorter range, slower charging and more 12-volt failures. Summer heat and humidity add a smaller one.

Highways & corridors

Chicago roads we cover.

Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94)

With the Dan Ryan, one of the two busiest state routes in Illinois. It links the Loop with O'Hare. Long crawls in winter with the heater on use more energy than the distance suggests.

Dan Ryan Expressway

The South Side's main expressway and, alongside the Kennedy, the busiest state-maintained road in Illinois. Narrow shoulders under heavy traffic make it a hard place to stop.

Lake Shore Drive

Follows much of the lakefront. Wind off Lake Michigan and spray in winter make the drive scenic and cold. Exits are spaced apart, so do not count on a quick off-ramp.

Where you might need backup

When a Chicago charger lets you down.

Chicago has plenty of chargers, but on a frozen night many sit in garages with tight access or on streets blocked by snow. If the station you counted on is iced over or occupied, do not head onto the Kennedy or the Ryan to find another in single digits. Park legally, note the cross streets or garage level, and call. A street address is enough for dispatch.

Driving notes

Range in Chicago.

Lake-effect and late snow

The article notes lake-effect snow when winter storms pull northeast winds over Lake Michigan, and measurable snow can last into the first weeks of April. A sudden squall cuts visibility and range. Charge before you set out when one is forecast.

Garages downtown

In the Loop, most charging is underground or in multilevel decks with low clearance and poor signal. Note the level and stall number before you go down. Tell dispatch if an attendant or gate controls entry.

Millennium Park crowds

City arts staff say the Crown Fountain at 201 E. Randolph shows the faces of 1,000 Chicagoans and runs water from spring to fall. Summer events around the park close streets and fill garages, so plan charging before you arrive.

A river that runs backward

Engineers reversed the Chicago River so it flows away from Lake Michigan rather than into it, to stop sewage from polluting the city's water supply. The river's north and south branches split the city into sides. When you call near the river, say which branch and which bank you are on.

After the 1871 fire

The Great Chicago Fire of October 1871 destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 people homeless, yet the population kept growing. Much of today's dense core was rebuilt afterward, with tight streets and alleys. In the Loop, alley loading zones are often easier for us to reach than a garage, so mention one if it is nearby.

The grid

The street grid grew from the original townsite, bounded by Lake Michigan, North Avenue, Wood Street and 22nd Street, and it still makes addresses easy to place. Give the house number and the nearest major street, and a technician can find you quickly. Labor history also left marks across the city, from the Haymarket affair of 1886 to the Pullman Strike of 1894.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

Kennedy Expressway on a January evening

Tesla Model 3

Imagine a commuter heading toward O'Hare on a 2°F night, stuck in slow traffic with the heater running, the range falling to four miles. In this scenario the driver would exit at the next ramp and stop legally. A technician would meet the car off the expressway and add enough range to finish the commute.

Example call

Street parking after a snowfall

Kia Niro EV

Picture a resident digging out a Niro after a night of snow, only to find the car will not respond at all. The 12-volt would likely be dead. A technician would jump it and, if the car were wedged by a plow ridge, winch it out. A hypothetical example.

    Local questions

    Chicago, answered.

01Can you reach me in a Loop garage?

Usually. Give the garage name, level and stall. Some low decks may be too tight for our vehicle.

02Do you cover the Kennedy and Dan Ryan?

Yes. Exit if you can, or get to the shoulder with hazards on. Call 911 if you are in a live lane.

03Can you help near O'Hare or Midway?

Yes, in public lots and hotels. Airport-controlled zones may have restrictions.

04Will one charge get me out of the Loop?

Roughly 25 to 50 miles; on a frigid lakefront night it lands toward the lower end. Enough to reach a station in the city.

    05Do you tow EVs?

Yes, flatbed through partners. City tows run $150 to load and $10 for every mile.
