Know Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the seat of Salt Lake County, with 199,723 residents at the 2020 census. It sits along the Wasatch Front, a 120-mile urban corridor of about 2.8 million people. Two cross-country freeways meet here: I-15 running north-south and I-80, which links downtown to the airport on the west and climbs east through Parleys Canyon. I-215 forms a belt route. The Utah Geological Survey describes the Great Salt Lake as a terminal lake with no surface outlet, averaging about 75 miles long and 35 miles wide at an elevation near 4,200 feet. For EV drivers, the valley floor is easy, but canyon grades and winter cold can quickly drain a pack. We take calls downtown, near the airport and along the freeways.

Three ways we help.
Salt Lake City climate, by the numbers.
Salt Lake City has hot summers and snowy winters. The article reports about 56 days a year at or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, 23 at 95 or more and nine at 100 or higher. In winter, lake-effect snow off the Great Salt Lake falls six to eight times a year. For EVs, cold mornings and canyon climbs combine to cut range sharply, while summer heat adds cooling load in traffic.

Salt Lake City roads we cover.
The north-south spine of the Wasatch Front, crossing I-80 in the city. Morning and evening commuter traffic toward Davis and Utah counties can turn short hops into long, slow climate-controlled waits.
Links downtown with the airport to the west, then climbs east through Parleys Canyon toward Park City. That climb uses a lot of energy, especially on cold winter mornings with the heater running.
The belt route around the valley, connecting the suburbs without passing downtown. Exits are spread out, and circling for a charger on it adds miles quickly.
Range in Salt Lake City.
Parleys Canyon
I-80 east climbs steadily through Parleys Canyon toward the mountains. Leaving the valley below a quarter charge on a winter morning is a real risk. Charge in town first, and do not try to make up range on the downhill return.
Lake-effect snow
The article notes lake-effect snow off the Great Salt Lake six to eight times a year, sometimes heavy. Snow slows traffic, increases consumption and reduces visibility. Add margin when storms are forecast and give dispatch a precise location.
The lake to the west
The Utah Geological Survey describes the Great Salt Lake as a terminal lake with no outlet, about 75 miles long. Drives west past the airport toward the lake cover open country with few services, so leave with plenty of charge.
A grid with one origin
The street grid uses a compass plan, with the southeast corner of Temple Square as the origin of the Salt Lake meridian. Addresses such as 900 South or 1300 East count blocks from that point. That makes it easy to tell dispatch where you are: give the two grid coordinates and the side of the street. Settlers led by Brigham Young founded the city in July 1847, and the grid dates from that layout.
Sugar House and the east bench
Sugar House Park holds the Sego Lily Dam, a flood-control structure built in 2017 in the shape of the flower that Shoshone residents taught early settlers to harvest. Neighborhoods east of downtown rise toward the mountains, so short trips there involve real climbs. Plan a little more range for east-bench errands than the distance suggests.
The Jordan River and City Creek
The Goshute had their own names for the Jordan River and City Creek, which the article records. The Jordan runs north through the west side of the valley toward the Great Salt Lake, while City Creek comes down from the mountains near the capitol. Westside neighborhoods along the river are flatter than the east bench.
When a Salt Lake City charger lets you down.
The valley floor has plenty of chargers, but the next one is not always on your side of I-15. If a station is full and the alternative is up a canyon or across the valley, a low pack in cold weather may not get there. Stop before the climb, park safely and call.

I-80 eastbound below Parleys Canyon
Rivian R1T
Imagine a skier leaving downtown on a frigid morning, watching range fall faster than expected in stop-start traffic. Rather than start the canyon climb nearly empty, the driver would pull off before the grade and call. A top-up would cover the trip up the mountain.
Airport long-term lot
Chevrolet Bolt EUV
Imagine a traveler returning from a week away during a cold snap to a car that will not wake. A technician would jump the 12-volt, then check that the main pack had enough range for the drive into the city.

Salt Lake City, answered.
01Can you reach me in Parleys Canyon?
Where there is a safe place to stop, yes. If you can, exit at the canyon mouth before calling so the technician can work away from traffic.
02Do you serve the airport area?
Yes. Give dispatch the lot name and row or the rental return area. Airport rules may affect where a technician can park.
03What does a winch-out from snow cost?
Winch-out and recovery costs $200. Dispatch will ask how deep the car is stuck and whether the spot is safe.
04Do you install 12-volt batteries in cold weather?
Yes. Installation costs $195, with the replacement battery billed separately.
05Can you tow an EV with a flatbed?
Yes, through towing partners. Towing costs $150 plus $10 per mile, quoted before dispatch.
