About Dallas

Know Dallas.

Dallas is the seat of Dallas County and covers nearly 386 square miles, reaching into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. The article puts its 2020 population at 1.3 million, the third-largest in Texas, and notes that with Fort Worth it anchors a metroplex of about 8.5 million people. Interstate construction reinforced the city as a transportation hub: four major interstates converge here and a fifth loops around it. Downtown is wrapped by a small freeway loop, I-635 circles about ten miles out, and the tolled President George Bush Turnpike forms an outer ring. Where I-635 meets US 75 sits the five-level High Five interchange. Klyde Warren Park, a deck park built over the sunken Woodall Rodgers Freeway, now links downtown with Uptown. We meet stranded EV drivers across this grid, from Deep Ellum to Oak Cliff to the far north.

Local weather & your EV

Dallas climate, by the numbers.

The Dallas article identifies July and August as the hottest months, with average highs near 96 degrees Fahrenheit and lows near 76. The all-time record is 113 degrees, set on June 26 and 27, 1980, at nearby DFW Airport. Summer heat means long waits in traffic cost range through cooling. Winters are milder but can bring ice that slows traffic and reduces efficiency.

Highways & corridors

Dallas roads we cover.

I-35E

Follows the Stemmons Corridor along the Trinity and then runs south past downtown and South Dallas. Industrial frontage roads offer places to stop, but traffic is heavy and fast.

US 75

Central Expressway heads north to the High Five with I-635. Its five-level stack is no place to run out, so watch your range before committing to it.

I-635

LBJ Freeway loops about ten miles from downtown. A full lap is long; drivers who circle for a charger can burn far more than they expected.

State DOT
Where you might need backup

When a Dallas charger lets you down.

The freeway rings make every detour long. If the closest fast charger is broken and the next one sits across the High Five or on the far side of the I-635 loop, a low pack may not survive the trip. Do not chase a station you cannot reach. Exit to a safe lot, share the nearest cross street and let a technician bring the range to you.

Driving notes

Range in Dallas.

Rings within rings

Downtown has its own loop, I-635 circles farther out and the Bush Turnpike forms an outer ring. Missing an exit can add many miles. When you are low, take the surface street option and keep the trip short.

Deck park downtown

The FHWA describes Klyde Warren Park as a deck of about 5 acres over Woodall Rodgers Freeway between Pearl and St. Paul streets. Trips under it are in a covered trench, so if your car slows there, keep going to the surface before stopping.

Ice and heat

Dallas swings from summer highs near 96 to occasional winter ice. Both extremes reduce range. Check the forecast before long freeway runs and add margin in July or during a freeze.

Across the Trinity to Oak Cliff

Oak Cliff, southwest of downtown, was a separate city until Dallas annexed it in 1903. The article describes hilly North Oak Cliff as home to five of the city's thirteen conservation districts, including Kessler Park and the Bishop Arts District. Reaching it from downtown means crossing the Trinity River, where the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is one of several spans. Narrow older streets in Bishop Arts fill on weekend evenings, so give dispatch the exact block.

Fair Park in autumn

South Dallas holds Fair Park, where the State Fair of Texas runs from late September through mid-October. Those weeks bring heavy traffic and full lots in the area. The article also notes the Great Trinity Forest, wetlands between the river and South Dallas. If you are visiting the fair, arrive charged; stations near the grounds are easily overwhelmed.

Escarpment and three forks

The article says a founding settler planted a stake in 1839 on a bluff near three forks of the Trinity River, and a short-lived French community called La Reunion later stood in what is now West Dallas. East of downtown, the White Rock Escarpment, a limestone ridge rising about 230 feet, runs north to south through Dallas County. That ridge is why some east-side drives involve noticeable climbs despite the generally flat reputation. DART rail and buses also serve the city and its suburbs, which can help if you need to leave a car while a technician is on the way.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

US 75 northbound before the High Five

BMW i4

Imagine a commuter who expected to charge at work in the north suburbs but hit a breakdown on Central Expressway. Showing 4 miles before the interchange, the driver would exit to a frontage road lot and call for a top-up.

Example call

Garage near Klyde Warren Park

Volkswagen ID.4

Imagine a visitor returning to a downtown garage after a weekend to find the car dark. A technician would test and jump the 12-volt, then confirm the pack had enough charge for the drive home.
