About Tampa

Know Tampa.

Tampa is the seat of Hillsborough County and the third most populous city in Florida, with 403,364 residents at the 2020 census and a metro area of more than 3.4 million. Its borders take in the north shore of Tampa Bay and the east shore of Old Tampa Bay. Interstate 4 and Interstate 275 cross the city and meet near downtown, and I-75 runs along the east side before cutting through New Tampa, a 24-square-mile area annexed in 1988. Three bridges reach Pinellas County: the Howard Frankland on I-275, the Courtney Campbell Causeway on SR 60 and the Gandy Bridge. Ybor City, Raymond James Stadium, Port Tampa Bay, MacDill Air Force Base and a 2.6-mile Riverwalk along the Hillsborough River fill out the map.

Local weather & your EV

Tampa climate, by the numbers.

The article describes a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers, frequent thunderstorms and dry, mild winters. Average highs range from 71 to 91°F through the year, and lows from 53 to 77°F. The official high has never reached 100°F, which the source attributes to nearby water. No monthly table is attached to this page. For EVs, the cost is steady heat from late spring to early autumn and storms that slow every road.

Highways & corridors

Tampa roads we cover.

I-275

Crosses the city and meets I-4 near downtown before heading west over the Howard Frankland Bridge. That bridge is a long open-water span; do not start across on a nearly empty pack.

I-4

Starts at I-275 near downtown and runs east toward Orlando. The interchange area is heavily trafficked, and slow merges with the air conditioning on use more energy than drivers plan for.

I-75

Runs along the east side of the county before turning west through New Tampa. Distances between the suburbs and downtown are longer than they look on a map.

Range in Tampa.

New Tampa distances

The 1988 annexation of New Tampa added a large, mostly suburban area between I-275 and I-75. Trips from there to downtown are real highway runs. Check road distance, not straight-line distance, before trusting the range estimate.

Summer storms

The article describes summer weather from late May to early October with daily highs near 91°F and a regular chance of afternoon rain. Some storms turn severe with heavy downpours and lightning. Charge earlier in the day during that season.

Riverwalk and Ybor nights

The city's Riverwalk is 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River, and Ybor City draws crowds at night. Parking there fills fast. If you are low after an evening out, stay in your space and call rather than circling for a charger.

Along Bayshore Boulevard

Bayshore Boulevard follows Hillsborough Bay from downtown into South Tampa. It was built during the 1920s Florida boom, the same era that produced the Tampa Theatre and the Mediterranean revival homes on Davis Islands. The road is scenic but long, with few side streets to duck into on the bay side; if the range is falling, turn inland toward Hyde Park before you stop.

Neighborhoods by name

Tampa's well-known neighborhoods include Ybor City, Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights, Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Davis Islands, Harbour Island, Channelside and Tampa Palms. Seminole Heights and South Tampa are known for restaurants and evening crowds. When you call, name the neighborhood and the cross street; it speeds up finding a safe place to set up.

Cigars, rails and the port

Henry Plant's railroad and Vicente Martinez Ybor's cigar factories set off Tampa's rapid growth in the late 1800s. Today Port Tampa Bay is the largest port in Florida, with more than $15 billion in economic impact. Truck traffic around the port and Channelside runs all day, so pull well off the road before you call there.

Where you might need backup

When a Tampa charger lets you down.

Tampa's chargers cluster downtown, around Westshore and near the malls, but the city spreads far north into New Tampa. A broken stall downtown is a short hop; a broken one in the northern suburbs can mean a long drive back on I-75. If you are below 10 miles and the station is down, stay put and call. Do not head for the Howard Frankland or the Gandy to find another charger in Pinellas.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-75 northbound into New Tampa

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Imagine a commuter leaving downtown late, sitting through a storm-slowed crawl and seeing three miles left near the New Tampa exits. In this scenario the driver would take the next exit and stop legally. A mobile charge would add enough range to get home.

Example call

Ybor City parking after a show

Kia EV6

Picture friends leaving a late show in Ybor City to an EV6 at 2 percent, the nearby charger blocked. The driver would stay parked and call with the lot name. A technician would add enough charge to reach home. A hypothetical example only.

    Local questions

    Tampa, answered.

    01Do you cover New Tampa?

Yes. It is a long drive from downtown, so estimates may run longer. Dispatch will say so.

02Should I cross the Howard Frankland on low charge?

No. Stop on the Tampa side and call. The bridge is a long span with no safe place to stop.

03Can you reach Ybor City and the Riverwalk?

Yes. Give the lot or garage and the nearest street. Event nights can slow access.

04How far will one session take me?

About 25 to 50 miles per visit, enough to reach a station anywhere in the city.

    05Do you tow?

Yes. Partner flatbeds charge $150 to start plus $10 a mile, with all four wheels kept off the pavement.
