Local weather & your EV

Columbus climate, by the numbers.

The monthly table shows July highs near 93°F and January lows around 38°F, with about 49 inches of precipitation. Summers are long and humid, and winters are short and mild. For EVs, the heat is the main factor: cooling the battery and cabin from June through September costs real range, and afternoon storms slow traffic on I-185.

Highways & corridors

Columbus roads we cover.

I-185

Runs north-south through the middle of the city with nine exits in Muscogee County, then about 50 miles north to I-85. Commercial growth has spread north along it since the late 1990s.

J.R. Allen Parkway (US 80)

Crosses the northern part of the city east to west. It connects I-185 to Phenix City and Alabama, so drivers low on charge sometimes find themselves across the state line.

Manchester Expressway

Alternate US 27 and SR 85 run northeast as the Manchester Expressway, a busy retail corridor where shopping trips can stretch longer than planned.

Driving notes

Range in Columbus.

Two states, one river

Phenix City sits directly across the Chattahoochee in Alabama, and bridges link the two downtowns. A driver can cross the state line without noticing. When you call, tell us the state as well as the street, so the technician heads to the right bank.

The RiverWalk

The city parks department says the RiverWalk began in the late 1980s as part of federally required sewer upgrades and opened its first phase in 1992. Its trailhead lots are pleasant but quiet at night. Return with some charge to spare.

Near Fort Benning

The installation lies south of the city. Access rules apply on post. If you are stuck inside the gates, follow base procedures first; we can meet you at an accessible point outside.

Founded at the head of navigation

The Georgia Legislature founded Columbus in 1828 where the Chattahoochee becomes navigable and the Federal Road crossed into Alabama. Downtown still faces the river and its bridges. When the range is low, the closest charger may be across one of those bridges in another state, so note which side you are on before you call.

Mill town history

Textile mills grew along the river, and by 1860 the city was nicknamed the Lowell of the South, after the Massachusetts mill town. The Eagle Manufacturing Company made woolens for Confederate uniforms. The riverfront blocks where those mills stood are close to Uptown, so give a building name or cross street when you call.

Fort Benning's footprint

The article places Fort Benning south of the city in southern Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties, a major employer and home of the Maneuver Center of Excellence. Commuters to the post often travel long distances on hot days. If you live on the north side and commute south, check the range before you leave, not after.

How the RiverWalk began

The city parks department says the RiverWalk grew out of federally mandated sewer and water upgrades, built in partnership with the Water Works, with construction starting in 1989. Its trailheads are spread along the river, some far from main roads. Note the access point when you park.

Where you might need backup

When a Columbus charger lets you down.

The city's commercial growth runs north along I-185, while the river, downtown and the fort sit to the south. A broken charger on the north side may mean a long run back down the interstate. If the pack is very low and the station is out, stay put and call. And if you are near the river, do not cross into Phenix City hoping for another option on the last few miles.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-185 northbound near the retail corridor

Chevrolet Bolt EV

Imagine a soldier heading north after a long shift, misjudging the range on a hot afternoon and stopping near an exit with two miles left. In this scenario the driver would pull into a safe lot and call. Our van would come up I-185 and put back enough miles to finish the trip north.

Example call

RiverWalk parking downtown

Hyundai Kona Electric

Picture a couple returning from an evening on the RiverWalk to a Kona that will not wake after sitting all day in heat. Heat-weakened 12-volt cells would be the first suspect. A technician would jump it and confirm the car starts. A hypothetical example only.
