About Tuscaloosa

Know Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa is the seat of Tuscaloosa County in west-central Alabama, built on the Black Warrior River where the Gulf Coastal Plain meets the Piedmont. The 2020 census counted 99,600 residents, and the 2025 estimate was 114,288. Water oaks planted downtown since the 1840s gave it the nickname Druid City. It served as Alabama's capital from 1826 to 1846 and is now the regional center for health care, industry and education in West Alabama, anchored by the University of Alabama. On April 27, 2011, an EF4 tornado tore through the city, and Tuscaloosa marked its bicentennial in 2019. For drivers, the river crossings and the I-20/59 corridor are the frame of nearly every trip.

The 2011 tornado path

The National Weather Service survey says the EF4 strengthened as it crossed the Black Warrior River north of I-20 and destroyed buildings near I-359, including the county emergency operations center. Spring storm warnings deserve real respect here; shelter first, call later.

River crossings

The Black Warrior River divides the city, and the parkway bridge is tolled. When you call, tell us which side of the river you are on so we can choose the fastest crossing.

Game-day traffic

The university draws large crowds on home weekends. Expect our estimate to be longer then. Charging before you head for the stadium area is the best way to avoid a stop in a crowd.

Locks, dams and the lake

Army Corps of Engineers locks and dams built on the Black Warrior in the 1890s tied Tuscaloosa to the port of Mobile and fed the area's mining and metal industries. Today about 10 of the city's 72 square miles are water, mostly Lake Tuscaloosa, which sits entirely inside city limits, plus the river itself. Roads around the lake wind and dead-end, so a lakeside call needs a precise cove or road name.

Plant traffic west of town

Mercedes-Benz announced in 1993 that its first North American assembly plant would be in Tuscaloosa County, though the article still calls the university the city's main economic engine. Shift traffic to the plant uses I-20/59, which can slow our approach from the city at change-over times.

Highways & corridors

Tuscaloosa roads we cover.

I-20/59

Two interstates run together past the city south of the river. A sustained highway pace toward Birmingham or Meridian drains a low pack faster than in-town driving.

I-359

A short spur north from I-20/59 that ends downtown. It is the main gateway for game days, when ramps back up and a creeping car can burn its last miles idling.

US 82

One of three federal highways through the city, alongside US 11 and US 43. It crosses the river and serves the northern side, where chargers are fewer.

Black Warrior Pkwy

The source article lists a toll road and toll bridge here, at $1.25 for cars. Make sure you have range to clear the bridge before choosing it.

State DOT
Where you might need backup

When a Tuscaloosa charger lets you down.

On a football Saturday, every station near campus and downtown can be busy for hours. If you are low and the queue is long, do not join a ramp backup on I-359 hoping to find an open stall later. Park somewhere legal and call. A $175 charge where you sit is cheaper and calmer than a flatbed at $150 plus $10 per mile, and you can rejoin traffic when it thins.

Local weather & your EV

Tuscaloosa climate, by the numbers.

Tuscaloosa's winter runs from mid-December to late February, with a January daily average of 44.7°F and about 46 nights a year at or below freezing. January and February are, on average, the wettest months, and measurable snow is rare. The airport has recorded 107°F twice, in 1952 and 2007, and a low of minus 1°F in 1985. Summer cooling and spring storms are the main concerns for EV drivers.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-359 northbound on a game day

Volkswagen ID.4

Imagine a fan inching toward downtown with the battery under five percent after a long drive from out of state. The sensible plan would be to leave the queue at the first exit, park legally and call. A technician would add range once traffic allowed access.

Example call

Campus lot after winter break

Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Picture a student returning in January to a car that will not power on. A $140 jump would likely revive the 12-volt, and if the pack were also low, the $195 bundle would cover both. This is hypothetical, not a record of real service.

    Local questions

    Tuscaloosa, answered.

01Can you reach me near Bryant-Denny on game day?

Possibly, but crowds and road closures slow everything. Move to a reachable lot if you can and we will give you an honest window.

02Do you cover Northport across the river?

We take calls across the area. Tell us which side of the Black Warrior River you are on so the route makes sense.

    03What does a charge cost?

Plan on $175 for 25 to 50 miles of range. The jump-and-charge pair is $195.

    04Can you swap out a failing 12-volt?

Yes. Installation is $195 and the battery itself is extra. You hear the battery price before we start.

    05Can you tow an EV?

Yes. If the car cannot be charged where it sits, a partner flatbed hauls it for $150 plus $10 per mile, and we say so before booking.
