Know Houston.
Houston is the most populous city in Texas, with 2.3 million residents at the 2020 census, and the seat of Harris County, with portions reaching into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. It covers about 640 square miles, which the article says makes it the ninth-largest U.S. city by area. Houston was founded in 1836 where Buffalo Bayou meets White Oak Bayou and grew on its port, railroads and the Ship Channel. Locals describe places as inside or outside the Interstate 610 Loop; Beltway 8 circles about ten miles from downtown and the Grand Parkway about 25. NASA states that Johnson Space Center, home of Mission Control, was established in Houston in 1961. All of this adds up to long distances, frequent flooding and very hot summers, which together shape most EV roadside calls. We take them inside the Loop, along the Beltway and out toward the Grand Parkway.

Three ways we help.
Houston climate, by the numbers.
Houston's climate section reports about 106 days a year at or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with some days reaching 100. Humidity and heat make summer the hardest season for EV range, since cooling runs constantly. Heavy rain is the other major factor: the floods of 2015, 2016 and 2017 show how quickly streets and freeways can close.

Houston roads we cover.
The inner loop that defines how Houstonians describe location. About 470,000 people live inside it. Its interchanges with I-10, I-45 and I-69 are where low packs give out in slow traffic.
Circles roughly ten miles from downtown, and about 1.65 million residents live between it and the 610 Loop. Long stretches between exits make range planning important.
The outer ring, about 25 miles from downtown. Services and chargers are farther apart out here, so leave the city with a buffer.
When a Houston charger lets you down.
In a city this spread out, the next fast charger may be on the far side of a loop or across a bayou. If a station is full or broken and your car is in single digits, driving to the next one can mean a long highway leg. Stop safely and call instead. After heavy rain, never drive through standing water to reach a charger.
Range in Houston.
Three rings
Inner Loop, Beltway, Grand Parkway: each ring is farther out and has wider gaps between services. When you are low, stay on surface streets inside the ring you are already in rather than jumping outward.
Flood risk
The article recounts the 2015 Memorial Day flood, the 2016 Tax Day flood and Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when some areas saw more than 50 inches of rain. Never drive an EV through floodwater; call from higher ground.
Clear Lake trips
Johnson Space Center lies far southeast of downtown. Visitors driving out and back on I-45 often underestimate the round trip in heat. Charge before the return leg.
Business districts beyond downtown
Houston has many job centers besides downtown: the article lists Uptown, the Texas Medical Center, Midtown, Greenway Plaza, Memorial City, the Energy Corridor, Westchase and Greenspoint. Several lie well outside the 610 Loop. Daily commutes between them are long, and an EV that charges only at home can come up short after an unplanned cross-town meeting. Tell dispatch the district name when you call; it narrows the search fast.
Four bayous
The article says four major bayous pass through the city, carrying water from its drainage system. Houston itself was founded in 1836 where Buffalo Bayou meets White Oak Bayou, now Allen's Landing. Roads near the bayous can be affected when the drainage system fills. If water is rising, do not try to drive to a charger; move to higher ground and call.
Airport heat records
The highest temperature recorded in Houston is 109 degrees, reached at Bush Intercontinental Airport on four days between 2000 and 2023. Cars left in airport long-term lots during heat waves spend energy cooling their batteries while parked. Expect lower range on return and plan a charge stop before the drive home.
Port and Ship Channel roots
After the Civil War, Houston businessmen pushed to widen the bayous so ships could reach the city from Galveston. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt approved a one-million-dollar improvement project for the Houston Ship Channel, and the 1900 hurricane that devastated Galveston shifted the port role inland. The industrial east side along the channel still carries heavy truck traffic, so if you stop there, move well off the road.

Imagine a driver crawling past the Galleria with the air conditioning on and the estimate falling below 5 miles. Exiting to a parking lot and calling, the driver would get a mobile charge to continue home.

Imagine a hospital worker returning after a long shift to a car that will not wake. A technician would test the 12-volt, jump it and check that the pack had enough charge for the drive.
