About San Diego

Know San Diego.

San Diego is the county seat of San Diego County and the second largest city in California, with 1,386,932 residents in the 2020 census. It sits on the Pacific coast directly above the Mexican border, and the San Ysidro Port of Entry is among the busiest land crossings in the world. San Diego International Airport operates on a single runway close to downtown, while Balboa Park, Mission Valley, La Jolla and the university campuses of UC San Diego, San Diego State and the University of San Diego spread the city north and east. With more than 80 percent of residents relying on cars, the freeway network matters. We answer calls from the border to Sorrento Valley and from downtown to the eastern neighborhoods near the mesas.

Highways & corridors

San Diego roads we cover.

I-5

Runs from the Tijuana border north toward Los Angeles. Border waits and the long run up the coast both catch drivers short.

I-8

Heads east through Mission Valley toward Imperial County and Arizona. The eastbound grades out of the city are steep.

I-15

Runs northeast through Miramar to the Inland Empire and Las Vegas. Desert drives start here, often with too little buffer.

I-805

Splits from I-5 near the border and rejoins it at Sorrento Valley. A key inland commuter route.

SR 163

The city's oldest freeway, passing through Balboa Park toward Miramar. Scenic, but with narrow shoulders.

SR 905

Connects I-5 and I-805 with the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, a busy commercial crossing.

Border waits

Idle time in a crossing line costs less energy than driving, but long waits with the air conditioning on still add up. Northbound drivers who entered the line low sometimes emerge with almost nothing. Call once you are safely clear of the port.

Eastbound climbs

I-8 climbs into the mountains beyond the eastern suburbs, and I-15 heads toward the high desert. Both routes have long gaps between chargers outside the metro area. Start them with real margin, not a hopeful estimate.

Mesas and canyons

San Diego's neighborhoods sit on mesas separated by canyons, so a short trip on a map can involve real elevation. Tell us the canyon road or mesa neighborhood name so the technician picks the right approach.

Where you might need backup

When a San Diego charger lets you down.

San Diego drivers often run low in two places: waiting in border traffic at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa, and heading inland on I-8 or I-15 toward the desert. In both cases, a broken or full station near the start of the trip changes everything. If your plan was to charge just before the crossing or the climb and the station is unavailable, call us before pressing on with a thin margin.

Local weather & your EV

San Diego climate, by the numbers.

San Diego's climate table shows remarkably narrow swings: highs near 66°F in winter and about 77°F in August and September, with December lows around 50°F. Rain totals roughly 10 inches in a year, almost all from December through March. Mild temperatures mean few days of serious battery stress, though the article notes summer fog along the coast. The bigger range risk is terrain, not weather: inland trips toward the mountains and desert quickly leave this mild coastal pattern behind.

Area by area

Where we meet you in San Diego.

Downtown and the Gaslamp

Streets around Petco Park clog before games, and garage levels go deep. Walk up to street level for signal, then call with the garage name and level.

I-5 along the coast

The main coastal route is busy all day. Exit at the first safe ramp if your range is falling, and look for a large lot. Tell us the exit number so we approach the right side.

I-15 inland

Inland summers run hotter than the coast. Packs drain faster with AC on, and parked cars warm quickly. Call early rather than hoping to reach the next station.

Toward the border

Traffic near the crossings can stop for long periods. If you are heading south on a low pack, charge first; we cannot reach you once you are in the inspection lanes.

Before you call

Have your plate, model and charge level ready. Say whether the car powers on. Mention kids, pets or heat risk first. If anyone is in danger, call 911 before us.

Example calls

Hypothetical, on real roads.

Illustrations only. Not records of real jobs.

Example call

I-5 northbound after San Ysidro

Hyundai Kona Electric

Picture a cross-border commuter who waited much longer than usual in the northbound lanes, then pulled off shortly after the port with the pack at zero. In this example, the driver would move to a safe lot off the freeway and call. A technician would add a short charge to reach a fast station closer to downtown.

Example call

I-8 eastbound through Mission Valley

Ford F-150 Lightning

Imagine a Lightning owner towing a small trailer east on I-8, misjudging the extra consumption and stopping near the end of Mission Valley. Towing can cut range sharply. In this scenario, dispatch would confirm a safe spot and send a charger, then suggest a closer stop before the mountain grades. A hypothetical, not a logged job.
